Student's 'Jesus' shirt sparks feud with school

A Christian student suspended from a high school in Nova Scotia for sporting a T-shirt with the slogan "Life is wasted without Jesus" vows to wear it when he returns to class next week.

William Swinimer, who's in Grade 12, was suspended from Forest Heights Community School in Chester Basin in Lunenburg County for five days. He's due to return to class on Monday.

The devout Christian says the T-shirt is an expression of his beliefs, and he won't stop wearing it.

"I believe there are things that are bigger than me. And I think that I need to stand up for the rights of people in this country, and religious rights and freedom of speech," he told CBC.

Officials with the South Shore Regional School Board plan to meet with Swinimer to hopefully reach a compromise.

Nancy Pynch-Worthylake, board superintendent, said some students and teachers found the T-shirt offensive.

"When one is able or others are able to interpret it as, 'If you don't share my belief then your life is wasted,' that can be interpreted by some as being inappropriate," she said.

Refuses principal's order

Swinimer wore the T-shirt every day to class for several weeks. The principal told him repeatedly to stop wearing it, but the student refused to comply.

Swinimer says the principal would have accepted a shirt with the slogan, "My life is wasted without Jesus."

"But I didn't go for that because I have my rights as a Canadian citizen," Swinimer said.

Swinimer says he never intended to attack anyone else's beliefs. He says he will continue to wear the shirt and is prepared to be suspended the rest of the year.

The board is looking for some guidance on the matter. It hopes to bring in an expert to help mediate the dispute with Swinimer, his family and church supporters.

"We'll be looking for some people with understanding in this area to help us with that," Pynch-Worthylake said.

I'm torn between several different opinions regarding this issue: religious freedom and free expression, versus being generally inappropriate, irrelevant to a school's curriculum and even disruptive to the learning environment. I'd really like to hear some other views from Zoklet on this subject.

I get what you mean here, a lot of religious preaching isn't taken seriously for its message but it does get in people's way at times, especially in public schools where kids need to be focusing on their studies to begin with. It's to get people to identify with and put their energies toward something that won't nurture them for their needs as a person.

Even with freedom of religion, people are willing to compromise further by letting the government decide what constitutes an official religion. It's like having the right to give up on yourself completely.

The message on his was a bit pushy and arrogant, though, and there was no reason to wear it every day unless he wanted this type of response. I would have made the same decision.

Sounds like the student is only doing this for the attention, first of all why would he wear it so many consecutive days while being asked to change it, before it escalates to the point it had; also the student was asked to change the slogan to a less general statement the regarded everone to one that reflected the students own beliefs more.


The student still refuses to come to an agreement, that seems a little unlike something Jesus would do.

I see the student viewing this as an opportunity to get into the media spotlight, over a seemingly sensitive issue.

Jesus=/=Nazi shit. It was a little too harsh in the "all life is wasted" thing, so I can see why people would be upset, though. If he was wearing day after day solely to draw attention to himself, I would ban him from wearing it as well, because it's obvious he's trying to be disruptive, not because he's wearing clothing with a seemingly pushy religious message. His religion doesn't mandate that he wears a T-shirt that says that every day, so there's no reason to wear it every day.
