1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
Pretty much have a smoke screen coming out of the tail pile. It was shit before, stalling and over heating. But after I changed the spark plugs, cables, distributor cap and rotar. The white smoke screen started. Would it be worth it to fix it, im going to take it to a shop tomorrow but more then one opinion doesnt hurt. also why did it only start to smoke out the tail pipe after i did a tune up.

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
It probably started when you did the tuneup by coincidence. Cars seem to like to break something if you've just fixed something else.
Whether or not it's worth fixing depends on the condition of the vehicle, and whether or not you can DIY/have a friend do it for cheap/have a hookup at a shop..

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
The cars body is in pretty good shape, inside as well. transmission is strong, everything seems fine except the engine. I do have some small hookups at the shop and can get it a few bucks cheaper then other people. But this is something as a first year apprentice i wouldnt want to do my self.

also is it illegal to drive a car with white smoke coming out the tail pipe. I took it for a ride around the block and you can hear people comment. im a boss tho, so i just floor it and let them breathe my exhaust.

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
LOL, If you can hear people comment, either the exhaust isn't loud enough, or you aren't going fast enough. I took my II for a drive though my neighborhood after I spun a bearing and blew a headgasket. I had a plugged cat, and blew a hole through the down pipe, so I removed the exhaust from the header back, and took one last all out run around before I rebuilt the engine. The lima block is one of the most durable and forgiving 4 cylinders. Hell, I even ran across a cop while spewing thick white smoke all over my neighborhood with no repercussions, and my friends still talk about it to this day.

I hope you have to run that thing through Air Care and it fails
However the fact people were commenting on it is rather hilarious considering some of the cockbag tree huggers we have in BC

Changing a gasket is really easy, it just takes ages to do.
It will cost a lot to pay someone to do it for you.

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
Always been curious as to how hard it is to do. It looks fairly straight forward, just a lot of shit to take off to actually get to the damn gasket. As long as you remember where everything goes, it should be fairly simple, right?

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
You're training to become a mechanic but you're too scared to change a head gasket? Sheesh. You simply disconnect the fan and timing belts, the intake manifold and probably exhaust manifolds, remove the valve covers, remove the headbolts, then pull the head off. Clean off, replace gasket, put back together in reverse order.

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
Its not that I'm scared, to be honest I'd love to do it. The only problem is I have no where to work on my car. My car is shitty enough for me to practice on but I just don't have any space. My parents don't own property and I don't knnow anyone with a house well enough to ask them. If I had my own yard that would work well enough for me but the only place I have is on public roads. How redneck would I look changing a head gasket on a hill and on public property.

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
There are bonding solutions which can fix a blown head gasket, such as Loctite. Yo pour it in, heat the engine to a certain temp, let cool, reheat, let cool, and the solution will bond itself into the cracks in the gasket, effectively sealing the leaks.

Fair enough. I suppose if you have a choice of not doing major engine work at the side of the road, but lets face it, sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

I actually like the thunderbird especially the 1993 model. The front of the car is so sexy.

*shifty eyes* my car doesn't have a cup holder lol. Also I carry small amounts of weed near my gas cap, you have to push a button in the glove box to open it

not a bad idea. Though what if the weed accidentally flew out while driving? I prefer to wear trunk or brief underwear and crotch it near my testes

Funny, I have an even older TBird, make decent money, it will hand a new Mustang GT it's ass, and I keep my weed in the trunk in big bags labeled "evidence" on the rare occasion that I run across enough to bother with.
If they're in nice shape, the MN12 chassis are on their way to being cool once again. I don't think they'll count as classics for quite some time, but their 'cheap car' status has bottomed out, and the remaining cars will disappear or be owned by someone who keeps them nice.

Re: 1993 thunderbird lx with a blown head gasket.
rip car, I just got the call from my mechanic. It needs a new engine 1500-2000. So I drove her home and she stalled on me 4 blocks later. I had to roll it into a parking spot and start it 5 minutes later. Maybe i might fuck around with it and try to find a place to change the gaskets and head.
