Default laptop data recovery

So my friend brought a laptop for £35 ,its old ,bjut looks like it was used by a business
or organisation. Data has been deleted ,but looks like there may good data on there.

my friend plans on running recovery on it and seeing what can be found. Possibly logins

how would one recover deleted aol passwords for aol 9?.

if anything the product keys would be worth the money, possibly any recovered documents would be too.

he needs to use some sort of data recovery software, i have used TestDisk and Recuva down at work with good luck,(they are both open source,so free but if this company had even decent IT support they would have secure deleted everything, but then again if they are dumb enough to sell a computer with the HDD still in it, their may be some recoverable files, I just doubt anything to critical will be recoverable.

Just my .02cents

Just wondering completely off topic but if the computer crashes can you still recover files?

Yes.

You just hook up the hard drive using a external caddy or a sata/ide to usb

Ya, the only way to get the password and product keys would be to image the harddrive onto another hard drive, including all the active partition's bootup files, then mount the drive on a good machine and boot the drive off it. Then you could use an "un-hide password stars" utility to reveal the passwords which are hidden under the dots/stars or use a password recovery utility to search the registry, and the product keys could also be recovered directly from the windows registry file once the OS is successfully loaded. Data recovery tools recover data, not passwords and keys.

The only thing worth having after all where the product keys, the naked photos of the ex owner, her name ,address, phone number and cv and the lovely photo of her vagina

I'd restore everything on the drive using the TestDisk utility, then image it all to a second drive and try and boot off of it. If it boots, digging the keys out of the registry file using the registry editor would be a piece of cake. Then again, all registry keys are already available all over the Internet.
