Re: the weird shit on wikipedia thread.
The Door to hell:
The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971, Soviet geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 metres (230 ft) at 40°15′10″N 58°26′22″E / 40.25264°N 58.43941°E / 40.25264; 58.43941 (The Gates of Hell). To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided to burn it off. Geologists had hoped the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days, but the gas is still burning today. Locals have dubbed the cavern "The Door to Hell".
Next to capturing the gas, flaring is safer and friendlier to the environment than releasing the methane into the atmosphere, as methane is a relatively potent greenhouse gas and considered to have a high global warming potential of 72 (averaged over 20 years) or 25 (averaged over 100 years)

That's awesome. It kinda reminds me of Centralia.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania
An underground mine fire happened there and apparently it was dangerous enough that the government took all the land and evacuated it. I guess there are a few people who still live there, but it's now a creepy abandoned town in ruins covered in overgrown plants.
This makes me want to find some urban exploration pics of that place...

Anal language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Not to be confused with Anus language.
Anal, also known as Namfau, is a Northern Kukish language, part of the Sino-Tibetan language family, spoken by a dwindling number of Anal people in India, Burma, and possibly Bangladesh.[1] It had 14,000 speakers in India according to the 2001 census.[1] UNESCO lists Anal as having 23,000 speakers in total, making it a vulnerable language.[2] It has two principal dialects, Laizo and Malshom, and is closest to Lamkang. The language of wider communication is Meithei.
Anal is written in the Latin script,[3] with a literacy rate of about 74%.[1]

Re: the weird shit on wikipedia thread.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troughman
Quote:
Troughman or Barry Charles (born 1950/51) was an Australian underground celebrity famous for his role in the paraphilia of watersports in toilets at Sydney gay venues in the late 1970s through 2000s.
In 1978, at the age of 28, Charles was exposed to watersports in New York through the Mineshaft bar.[1] Returning to Australia, Charles realised at the Signal Bar in Sydney how he could incorporate his newly discovered interest in watersports into the bar which lacked special facilities. He did this by using the shared urinal, or trough, common in Australian pubs and clubs. This habit resulted in the name Troughman being applied to Charles. Describing his sexual experience, Troughman began by crouching down and leaning against the urinal, before engaging in the signature activity he is most famous for, "it becomes easy to let myself go completely and, no longer kneeling or crouching, I lie right down in the urinal."[2] Troughman also engaged in other watersports, and recalls having used bandana code.[3]
According to Robert Reynolds by the early 2000s in the Sydney gay community "Troughman has become a cultural icon, an almost mythical figure," and that Troughman was particularly famous for his role in the Sydney Mardi Gras parties.[4] By 1996 Troughman had been mentioned in the mainstream media in relation to the Sleaze Ball.[5] Part of the myth of Troughman included persistent rumours of death.[6] Troughman's cultural impact entered into mainstream Australian culture, where by 2007, his practices could be referred to off-hand in relation to public urinals, and comprise part of contemporary Australian myth.[7]

A child found in the custody of William Cantwell Walters of Mississippi some eight months later was ruled to be Bobby Dunbar by a court-appointed arbiter, and Walters was found guilty of kidnapping. The child grew up as Bobby Dunbar, had four children of his own, and died in 1966. In 2004, DNA tests proved that the child found was not related to Bobby Dunbar's brother, Alonzo.

Yeah, I agree. Some of them are pretty cut and dry.
Like the "Before 1800" section and "1800-1899", are basically all about ships that went lost at sea and were never seen again.
Some are pretty interesting, and actually (to me) scary. In that, the fact that it could possibly happen in a real life situation...like being kidnapped, raised as someone else, or being trapped and held hostage for almost your whole life. Chilling.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaumon..._disappearance
Quote:
Children with a tall, blond man
Police investigating the case found several witnesses who had seen the children near the beach, in the company of a tall, blond man, of thin to athletic build and in his mid-30s.[3] The children were playing with him, and appeared relaxed and to be enjoying themselves. The man and the children were seen walking away from the beach some time later, which the police estimated to be around 12:15 pm.[4] A shopkeeper reported Jane Beaumont had bought pastries and a meat pie with a £1 note around the same time.[4]
Police viewed this as further evidence that they had been with another person, for two reasons:
The shopkeeper knew the children well from previous visits and reported that they had never purchased a meat pie before.
Mrs. Beaumont had given the children only enough coins for their bus fare and food and had not given them a £1 note. Police believed it had been given to them by somebody else.
Last confirmed sighting and societal effects
At about 3 pm the children were seen walking alone, away from the beach, along Jetty Road, in the general direction of their home. The witness, a postman, knew the children well, and his statement was regarded as factual. He said the children had stopped to say hello to him, and seemed cheerful. Police could not determine why the reliable children, already three hours late, were strolling alone and seemingly unconcerned. This was the last confirmed sighting of the children.
Mr and Mrs Beaumont described their children, particularly Jane, as shy. For them to be playing so confidently with a stranger seemed out of character. Investigators theorised that the children had perhaps met the man during a previous visit or visits and had grown to trust him. A chance remark at home, which seemed nothing significant at the time, supports this theory. Arnna had told her mother that Jane had "got a boyfriend down the beach".[citation needed] Mrs Beaumont thought she meant a playmate and took no further notice until after the disappearance.[citation needed]
Several months later a woman reported that on the night of the disappearance a man, accompanied by two girls and a boy, entered a neighbouring house that she had believed empty.[citation needed] Later she had seen the boy walking alone along a lane where he was pursued and roughly caught by the man. The next morning the house appeared to be deserted again, and she saw neither the man nor the children again. Police could not establish why she had failed to provide this information earlier.[citation needed]
Sightings of the children were reported for about a year after their disappearance. The case attracted widespread attention in Australia and is widely credited with causing a change in many people's lifestyles.[citation needed] Parents began to believe that their children could no longer be presumed to be safe; earlier generations had routinely allowed their children the same freedoms the Beaumont children had enjoyed.

This is why I like reading cases on the Doe Network. Most of them have little information or are pretty cut and dry, but you can find some pretty scary stories on there.
