Exploration in video games.
Are there any games where you can explore, or the main idea of the game is to explore? I'm getting bored of skyrim and new vegas.
I don't think there are enough games where exploration is actually enjoyable (i.e. you find intriguing things, or your curiosity is aroused making you want to carry on)

Dude I explored the shit out of vanilla W.o.W.
I love exploring in video games. Hopefully some good games pop up here so I can try them out.

Re: Exploration in video games.
-Ahhh yes, STALKER, fucking awesome game.
-I've got morrowind on my PC, never played it though, tonight I'll start.
-Played metro through twice, sick game, I hope the new one is just as good if not better.
-Which Deus Ex game are you referring to?
I should add Shadow of the Colossus, I know fanboys exaggerate everything about it but exploring the game world on horseback is fucking excellent, especially all the different landscapes. Nothing substantial to be found beyond a couple of tortoises and lizards but the views are rewarding.

If I could re-edit the map I'd add a whole bunch more underground shit, and if xbox had more power it'd be nice to double or triple the size of the bubble around you in which cars/people spawn so things wouldn't disappear so quickly.

STALKER is excellent, I'm playing through the original now and it's fucking amazing. I have the 2009 graphics mod though too so it's even more immersive.

Re: Exploration in video games.
Gothic 1 & 2(+addon), if you don't mind the older graphics. No other game has good exploration after those.
I've played the STALKER series, Elder Scrolls, Deus Ex, Metro.... And some of those were decent, but I loved exploration in Gothic and it really set a new standard.
EDIT: Also, Risen is pretty decent.

So basically you don't want to play video games? Because that's 90% of pretty much any game.

Which is why I'm looking for games with exploration. I have completed CoD:MW3/blops, bf3, bfbc2, resistance, etc. They're all good but you can't play through most of them twice unless you're playing online.

This. If you really want a challenge, get a copy of 'Riven: A Sequal to the Mist". There's plenty of exploration with puzzles that will fuckin make you lose your sanity. I had to use a walkthrough for like 80% of the game. Even with a walkthrough, its still hard as hell. However, I love the environments. They look are great, even for a game that was released in the late 90s

That mod is a casual fest.
It doesn't keep the gameplay vanilla like it says, if I really cared some bad points about it are the fact you can buy off factions from annoying you and something about all the guns having their accuracy increased by 20%.
Get AMK, Stalker Weather Overhaul, shaders max for SoC and absolute nature and textures. Looks as good if not better than complete.

Re: Exploration in video games.
Also, play The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.
Here's a little comparison Bethesda did when it comes to size of the gamemaps.
•The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion -- 16 square miles
•The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind -- 6 square miles
•The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall -- 62 square miles
Yep. 62.

Not really, I see it as a waste of brainpower. I'd have to learn so much stuff (boring) just to be able to understand the world and enjoy it more. I'd rather put my intellect into something I deem rewarding, like a degree at uni or a job.

No games have given me that "Can't wait to see what's round this corner" feeling like those games have.

EVE is 90% spread sheets and watching your ship slowly fly across systems to the next jump gate thing. And you can't even use autopilot if you don't want to get raped to shit in null-low sec systems.
I.E it sucks and you're probably autistic.

Re: Exploration in video games.
System Shock 1.
You wake up on a space station, and you need to figure out a way to survive.
The game doesn't hold your hand through it, so if you are not paying attention you will most likely get lost or go somewhere you're not supposed to be and die, or press the wrong button and accidentally nuke the Earth from orbit.
Exploration is crucial to the game, there are different ways to reach the areas, and the whole of the space station is available to explore nearly from the start.
