Lethal Air Rifle?

Is there any such thing as an air rifle that would be about the same as an actual gun? Like maybe one that could fire a .32 caliber ball at 1200-2000fps?

Why hasn't this been developed? A repeating one that could be cocked like a bb gun and have enough pressure to fire a projectile that size that fast. I'm sure it's possible.

It would be quiet (or at least not sound like a gunshot) and without having to worry about some shitty homemade silencer staying together. There would be a lot of advantages to this.

Is there anything like this though? Maybe it only holds one shot, but fires something that big just with air pressure? I know nail guns lol. And they're fully automatic and I'm pretty sure wouldn't have any problem going through body armor at close range. The only problem is having to carry around an air compressor.

You can kill someone with a skull shot with a .22 air rifle if you were close enough.

Do you know of this happening?

There are pistol rounds that go slower than some air rifles, the only thing I can think as far as why they won't penetrate as much is because pellets are soft lead w/no jacket.

I also looked up that thing that guy had on "No Country For Old Men". It's not used to kill cows and I don't think it will. Only stun them.

Even shooting someone in the head usually doesn't "kill" them instantly like in movies. There will at least be movement caused by nerves. And look at Giffords. I'm sure she's retarded now but she managed to survive a headshot. If you believe all that stuff. Thats why I ask if you know of any stories where that has happened.

A guy i went to school with was in critical condition after someone shot him in the head with an air rifle, cracked his skull like a fucking egg and there is tons of shit online about people dying after being shot with them, i've even read a few reports of it happening in local papers.

I think it's safe to say they are more than enough to be lethal

The other problem is you'd have to literally put it up to the armor to get it to penetrate it. There is no way you could 'shoot' a nail from a nail gun and have it penetrate armor.

This. Though I'd just go with a crossbow. Much cheaper, plus better penetration.

i've seen plans for a full auto .32 cal air gun powered by a refillable pony scuba tank. If you use a tank charged at 240bar/3500psi you can get more output force than a .32 ACP

Another (DIY) option that would be a little cheaper than a .50 cal airgun and much more personally rewarding would be to buy (or make) a quick exhaust valve (QEV), some steel/copper piping and a shock pump to make an air "cannon". You can choose the chamber volume, caliber, and ammo as well as the configuration of the cannon. I have no doubts that a decent 400-600psi cannon would be seriously lethal. Hell, a 150-200psi golf ball cannon with a fast valve would probably be lethal through pure kinetic force. Here's one of my earliest builds, the barrel isn't attached and the bolt action isn't installed in the pic (only pic I have of it). It can take around 600psi and can be quite devastating shooting large darts or bearings:

I've seen a video where a Gamo .177 air rifle kills a wild boar with one well placed headshot at around 15 yards, I'd say. It was one of their 1,200 fps models.

I think that one of those would be more than enough to kill someone if used properly.

Thanks for all the great replies. I guess you're right. A crossbow would be the same, but I've always been interested in a larger caliber high powered air gun.

And I'm not sure how fast a nail comes out of a nail gun, but just being so thin, plus being sharp would give it advantages for penetrating armor. Depending on the speed would tell you what the range would be but it would probably stop at the head usually unless you found a way to get them off and still be able to shoot them somehow

You can adjust the power of most Nail Guns.

I own a crossbow and the Gamo Hunter Extreme.

There are more laws Govrning the Crossbow than the Pellet rifles.

Pellet rifles can be 'suppressed' pretty well, whereas a crossbow or nail gun is limited and can't get much quieter at all.

There are full online forums dedicated to the modification and suppression of Pellet rifles for just about all makes and models.

Look into the EdGun - if you want to invest in a deadly accurate bull pup Pellet rifle. Comes in .177, .22, and .25! he's working on a full auto 900+RPM setup too.

Really? I looked into it in my locality, and I think I can legally shoot it anywhere so long as I don't damage people/property. Plus, them being naturally quite makes it hard to enforce.

I own a gamo rocket, and I feel it could kill a man with a lucky shot. Not something I'd rely on haha but most certainly lethal with the right conditions.

I've seen a through n through in a hunting accident on a mans thigh with a pellet rifle. Also seen people hunt deer with a higher calibre Air rifle.
