You could be. IQ and intelligence isn't about how much you know but how much you can learn. A person with a high IQ can still know very little if they don't try to learn.

They try the drug thinking they're better than every other junkie and really can do it in moderation, then addiction takes over and their entire life becomes about the drug.

In some cases, the smart person could just be so damn miserable that they'd give anything to feel better. I'd rather live to 40 having a ton of fun than live to 80 and have nothing to look back on but sadness.

i have a 143 iq myself. and ive known many addicts that were very smart. its funny how non drug users automatically assume if you use heroin then you must be stupid. funnily enough some of us actually do know what were doing. we actually laugh at non users who dis on heroin users while throwing 7/8 beers down their throats every night.

Don't get me wrong, drugs have no moral leaning and it's all in why you're using it. Edgar Allan Poe, the father of modern horror and all-around polymath, was an opiate abuser; but I tend to find intelligent addicts to be in the minority. Sure, the potential is there, but I can't really call someone who abuses a substance knowing it will eventually do them more harm than good intelligent.

Intelligent comes the latin roots Inter and Legere. Inter meaning "between" and Legere meaning something along the lines of "choose," "understand," "or read."" When read together you get something like "pick between."

While this is a purely etymological reading of intelligence, they certainly don't pick between the right decisions in regards to their health.

Funny bit of info if you're into jazz, Joe Pass is a heroine success story, he recorded what would become "virtuoso" while in detox. However, most heroine addicts seem to flounder.

let me clear something up, there are heroin addicts and there are junkies, two totally different kettles of fish. heroin addicts tend to keep themselves together better. junkies are the ones that just take anything you put under their nose, no matter what it is. they are usually only addicted to heroin from taking it along with other stuff and just cuz it was about and available to them. i've literally seen a junkie find a pill on the floor and chuck it in his mouth having no idea whether it was extasy, a dog diarretic or digitalis. it could have been anything and yet he took it anyway just cuz it might have given him a buzz. these are mostly the types that end up homeless and living permanantely on the streets and living as bums.
