It's not contradictory at all, it's explaining why people are "whining", so to speak. There's a history of shit like this happening down there, and nothing happens to bring justice to the victim unless people "whine". This shit knocks a lot of people back to the 1950s, and if you can't understand that, you need to be more empathetic and take steps to understand just why people might be pissed off. Those people doing the "whining" look at Martin and they see their sons, they're saying "That could have been my son, shot down at point blank range by a stranger at nighttime in my neighborhood because of nothing but the color of his skin. I want to trust the local authorities and my fellow citizens, but they'd slander and make up allegations against my son, post fake pictures of him, and laugh at me while the killer runs out of state".

Re-read the transcript, man. Zimmerman said Martin was looking at houses while walking around. When asked to describe Martin's current location, he said, at the clubhouse. He didn't say the kid had stopped, or that he was just standing there casing the joint. That's an interpretation of what he said, not what he actually said, and in context of what he DID say, it's entirely reasonable to expect that the kid would no longer be there when the cops showed, hence Zimmerman wanted to follow him.

That said, I don't buy into the whole school of one was evil and one was good or any of that dumb shit. I get the distinct impression that angry stupid kid met angry stupid cop-wannabe and the result is media coverage.

However, on a relevant note, here's an interesting thought to consider.

Martin lived on the other side of the state most of the time with his mother. It's unlikely that he was one of the burglars. Which makes me wonder.

??? - Zimmerman has a past history of assaulting a cop, and it seems that a plea bargain is the only reason he can still carry a gun. That's some real... respect for authority there.

2009 - Zimmerman moves into the neighborhood.
2011 - Zimmerman accuses Travis Williams of stealing a bike and requires him to prove its not stolen with the serial numbers. Apparently the kid had the serial #s as he was not arrested nor interrogated by real cops.
2011, September - Zimmerman is the only person to join the new Neighborhood Watch.
2011-2012 Jan-Jan - Zimmerman made 400 calls to the cops. Exactly one arrest was made even after joining the Watch, with no apparent conviction.
2011-2012 Feb-Feb - There were 8 burglaries, 9 thefts, one shooting.

You could argue that Zimmerman is fucking incompetent at best.

At worst, this smells like a cop-colored rat.

Side note: What is it this guy does for a living, exactly? The Watch job is free work.
