Alice: Madness Returns?
Been wanting to get it but at $60 for it I'm hesitant to, anybody played it? Is it good or a let down?

Re: Alice: Madness Returns?
The first one wasn't even a good game, just had good art direction and atmosphere.
Anyway, there's no way this is still $60. There's got to be quite a few places you can get it for $30 or under if you really want it that bad.

Not really that bad, just for some reason remember the first one being pretty good.

That the first Alice wasn't a particularly good game. It wasn't bad either, just middling.
It had good art direction and excellent presentation for its time but the core platforming was droll and the third person shooting was about as pedestrian as you can get.
The world was fun to get lost and and some of the characters quite memorable but the gameplay was about as bland as you can get.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns?
It's not a bad game at all. I actually enjoyed it.
Pros:
Fun game.
Nice atmospheric setting.
Alice looks cute.
Weapons are nice.
LOTS of collectibles to look for on each level.
Cons:
Levels are hours long.
Nothing but platforming and straightforward combat.
Lack of interesting puzzles.
Storyline is a bit sketchy.
I can see why people find it boring but I enjoyed the all out platforming. As for the story I didn't pay a lot of attention. It just seemed like a good old fashioned action platformer with modern graphics and I enjoyed it.

Wow, you just did it two times in a row.
You can't say a game has excellent presentation and art direction and then call it bland because the Quake 3 engine didn't work as great in the 3rd person. That's like calling Deus Ex a shitty game because the AI was gay and the Unreal engine didn't really work so well for a world of interaction.
It's just a stupid thing to say. One overshadows the other.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns?
When I play a game good presentation doesn't overshadow boring gameplay. If that's how it works for you that's cool, but don't expect me to adhere to your standards.

So by that standard Deus Ex and every point & click adventure game is mediocre at best. Neckbeard squad strikes again!

Deus Ex has great gameplay. Sure it might be rough around the edges in some areas but it makes up for it in others. It has poor AI and the shooting mechanics are ho-hum, but it has wonderful level design, enjoyable stealth aspects, and engaging missions.
As for adventure games, personally, I've never been a fan of point and click games. I've never finished one because they bore the shit out of me. Not even Grim Fandango. I loved the characters and the plot, but I just couldn't keep slogging through the garbage gameplay. Even if it had been a mediocre platformer like Psychonauts I would have kept going, but adventure games just don't hold my attention.
Again though, I'm not saying Alice is a bad game. I played through the whole thing and enjoyed myself. I'm just saying it's not particularly good, mostly because it's core game mechanics are uninspired and boring.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns?
I've been waiting for the price to go down on Madness Returns. I'm interested because I really enjoyed the first game but I also remember how quickly it would switch from awesome to boring to frustrating. Still, American McGee's Alice is one of those games that I'll re-download every once in awhile.
Does Madness Returns still include the original?

If you buy it new you get a one time use download code for the first one, if you buy it used you can buy the first one for like $10. You still need the Madness Returns disk to play it though.

I'll agree with you and proceed to ask when there will be more GoT.
Also, someone needs to bring back Sierra and Psygnosis.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns?
I've just finished Madness Returns. It had a boring repetition that maddens me but there are many aspects to it as well, and it's worth picking up. Good old fashioned boss battles can be frustrating in the best of ways, some other enemies like the ninja wasps card guards and drowned sailors are piece of piss to defeat, colossal ruin and the doll maker can be sumbitches. I like the way a story is intertwined into the reality and love the thought that's gone into the art and gameplay but this game could definitely be more polished. Still, a good title worth playing. That's my criticism.
