I have to close my eyes first, but the trick I use is to imagine my range of hearing as a conical matrix originating inside of my ear, and then I imagine it closing up into a line and disappearing back into my head. Or I make it focus in a particular direction, and this is kind of like when you focus in your vision on something close up, but other objects go out of focus. Still, it's nothing we can't all do by shifting awareness.

Also, I like to make melatonin at will by focusing on my pineal gland. I can't really get to sleep without doing this anymore

I can do this by physically perking up my ears and rotating them toward the direction I want to listen to. I sometimes get strange looks from people when I do that though. >_>
