I used these all through high-school. Loved these pencils. Why all the hate for mechanical pencils on Zoklet?

what advantage does a mechanical pencil have over a regular pencil, besides being more expensive and more complicated and break a thousand times easier? and less ergonomic imo?

Re: Best pens and pencils
Just got a sweet discount for OfficeMax in the mail, $10 off a $20 in-store purchase.
I've been going off found pens forever, time to get some new ones.
I really just use them for random notes, I carry a folded piece of paper with me, addressing envelopes, random things.
I haven't used many pens, but the best pen I've used for random note taking is the Pilot Precise, which I found on the sidewalk:
Nice and runny. It may have been the V7 version, though, which seems to have written a bit too thick.
Any others you'd recommend like this? i don't want to have press too hard to write. Whip out folded paper, hold in palm of hand, scribble something, that's what I need.

I liked them because they never needed sharpening and I never broke one. I never had a problem with them and the lines always stayed smooth when writing unlike a regular pencil when the lead went blunt.

I remember having dozens of these pens, althou in the 80s and 90 their just called Pilot V5 and V7, mand I think their still called that.
The great thing about this pens are that their refillable, you can just wedge your finger nails or a penknife in between the nib assembly and the body and pull it out and just drop some parker inks into them, or any ink for that mater.
Tha downside is that, fountain pen inks are not designed for roller balls and they dont have lubricating properties so putting these inks into them takes away its smoothness, but their still pretty useable.

Re: Best pens and pencils
I prefer lead holders to mechanical pencils. They work great and you rarely have to worry about extra lead.

The lead's thick, rather than thin. It won't break while you're writing. They're dependable.

Signo Uniball 207. It writes like I like my men: smooth, thick, and dark as night. Es perfecto.
I don't use the needle tip version, but the writing is very similar.

Re: Best pens and pencils
I was using them on a daily basis. Actually doing a lot of writing. Car sales and contracts to be exact.
I carry a 129 and swap between a Bohem fountain, Meisterstuk, and a few others. ]]]
Some are heavy, but I prefer that to a light pen. Everyones writing style is different and preferences are different. The perfect pen for me, regardless of price, is not going to be the same for you or the next guy. Thats why there are so many choices.

Uh.. ..lineweight, motherfucker. Amateurs like yourself should stick to those big chunky coloured pencils that you twist in the big sharpener hole.

Re: Best pens and pencils
Cool thread. I use Kilometrico pens (allegedly good for in excess of a kilometre) for slamming notes fluidly onto a page, as thats what my father used for his notes and thus I grew up around. old faithful.
I do acknowledge the greatness of the BIC crystal M though, and will tax a crystal m or pilot if left abandoned in the wild.
My favourite pen though is the Mitsubishi UniPin fineline 0.8

Re: Best pens and pencils
Fun thread, I'm currently using a Pentel Energel, cos I appreciate smooth writing, but for work you can't beat the bic 4-colour
Easy to change colour, reliable, dry ink, waterproof, never smudges. Perfect pen. Cheap as hell too. Do you get them in America? We have one version in Ireland, there's a pastel shaded version you can find in France as well.

Re: Best pens and pencils
There's also a spin off of that pen available with a clear top half and seven different colours. Apparently the different colours of pen ink, including purple, have specific meanings in grading papers.
In my experience those pens are complete shit though, scratchy needle point nibs because they don't have gel ink that comes smoothly but watery shit ink that dries up and leaves you with a seized ball.

Re: Best pens and pencils
Awesome thread. It could probably be moved to the art forum but I like it here just fine. I have this crazy rare bic that feels amazing to write with. Only problem is that sometimes the inks blots up and I'm on my last one and can't find more

Re: Best pens and pencils
I received a really fantastic coupon for OfficeMax/Depot near the beginning of the month and finally got around to using it, expires today. $10 off $20 for an in store purchase, some restrictions on a bunch of stuff I don't want/need anyway.
Tried out a bunch of pens since it seemed that multiple people had taken pens out of their boxes and even scribbles on the actual box. Shitload of pens, I refused to leave until I had really analyzed all of them.
Got a box of Uniball gel 207s along with the jetstream 101 because they were only $2 and I was below $20.
I would recommend a retractable jetsream, retractable because it is convenient for me for carrying in a pocket (too hip for a pocket protector).
Here's a pic of the pens I was talking about :

Re: Best pens and pencils
I found a pen in my jacket. It's made from two brass .308 casings, polished up, with a copper jacketed bullet in the lower casing -- centre drilled out so that the Schaefer ink refill can project in and out of the casing when you give the brass casings a free twist. It's more a novelty for an ex shooter than anything, but still cool nonetheless and smooth, too.
I'd love to send one of these up ArmsMerchant's way. Made in a hick town near where I was born.
