Default Where would be the most affordable place to find honey?

I've been looking online as I can't find any place locally that sales honey besides grocery stores and they don't have it in bulk. I'm looking to buy large quantities at preferably a discount price.

Have you tried a farmers market? If you ask, they will usually cut you a deal on quantity purchase.

Go right to the top. Make a deal with the Queen herself! and cut out the workers who want their cut.

No Costco or other such place nearby? Bees are mostly kept as pollinators. How can youse live in OK and not have a lot of hives? Have you used Goog-Local or searched out some OK apiculture org?

I tried the farmers markets. The people that have honey there are very un-knowledgable about their product. I ask them what type of flowers it mostly came from and they are like "durp, I don't know, its just honey." Also because they're local they want like 15 bucks a pound.

Depending on the flowers near the hive you get different tastes and colors.

I don't understand. Why do local farmers, at the farmer market, charge more?

Surely them being local should make it cheaper; and buying directly from them should also make it cheaper as it cuts out the middle man.

It's strange, I make a point to go to the farmers market on weekends because it's so much cheaper...

They are the only people selling honey there. Also I think it is because local honey is supposed to help with allergies and people will pay out the ass for it. I found several places online that sell 5 pound jars for 15 bucks but then they want 16 dollars for shipping.

I might just be stuck with Walmart honey... sadly.

This is kind of weird but must bee 5lbs and not 1/5th lb, at $13 KS price. No one would pay that much for 3oz.

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/pr...oductId=155341

Might cut you a deal if you buy 5 or 10.

Heart Re: Where would be the most affordable place to find honey?

Honey will make you go broke. I paid a total of about $50 for 15 pounds, enough for a 5 gallon batch of mead. Generally I just by it by the 3 lb container. I have access to 1 qt jugs (~4 lb) of my favorite brand, but it's not too cheap, about $25. The great thing about buying by the 3 lb jar in the case of mead making is that you can blend several different varieties for a more complex flavor(I used saw palmetto and 4 different varieties of wildflower).

Try finding stores that specialize in produce. The best vendors I know of are all stands that sell local produce kind of like farmers markets, except it's an actual store. They're usually around agricultural areas.

Honey is expensive period. It's something you don't really think about until you decide to start brewing honey with a still one day .

Try to find more local places. Maybe they'll be a bit more helpful, especially if you find someone that does it for hobby. Since honey never goes bad, you might be lucky and find someone with backstock willing to let it go for a cheap price. Have you tried craigslist?

The price has risen because of the bee deaths and Asians wanting more of it.

i actually can work bees and honey seasonally in south dakota. If you've seen the documentary about the bee's dying off or dissappearing, I processed honey for one of the main guys standing up to the pesticide / seed companies. I could ask him if he could mail it and what it cost.

It was one of the more interesting jobs I've taken and it was a cool experience. If you have any question on how the honey gets processed I'd be glad to answer, although it's VERY simple.

My grandfather used to keep a few hives so I'm familiar with the process. And I would be very grateful if you could ask him for me.

At the retail level, Walgreens often has the 32-ounce honey bears on sale for $5.99 or so, which is really cheap for Alaska.

I heard that a lot of the honey on the market comes from china where they use like antibiotics and pesticides or some shit. I forget the details but basically its possible that your honey is contaminated with gook bullshit.

Wonder if white nose syndrome is directly linked to mosquito insecticides.

Also, I'm very curious in the direction of the bee extinction. I'll be watching.
