Default Making .Tor more effective

Ok, so I recently started using .Tor and I've read a few things about the vulnerabilities with the software. Does anybody have ideas how to make .Tor safer/more effective? Are there Firefox add-ons or other steps I can take? Are there any other things I should do to become more anonymous?

EDIT: I have tried using backtrack, but I cant figure out how to install .Tor on backtrack...

Unless you are fairly proficient using Linux, then you probably wont have great success using Backtrack imo

well I have a little linux experience, but Backtrack does seem over my head sometimes.

I was also reading about using SSL encryption or multiple VPNs, but I'm not sure how to do this. Any have some ideas or links to good tutorials?

i mean the way i look at it, before i was using tor i just used firefox through one proxy and had it auto-wipe after i closed down. tor is obviously better than that. no doubt the gov could probably crack it at some point, but for now it's better than nothing.

How much do you want to bet that like 90% of all exit nodes are government owned/operated?

What exactly is TorButton? Is it necessary to use? Tor is working correctly for me (I just downloaded the bundle), but does using TorButton have any advantages? Right now I have to manually reconfig my proxy settings to switch between regular browsing and using Tor.
