Story I read when I was a kid
In ancient China, there was famine, and a lot of people went hungry. there was a rich and charitable man, who felt pity for the hungry, so he prepared food to give to the needy.
One man approached him for alms. He (the rich guy) said to him, "hey you! come eat!". The man responded, "Though in great hunger, I will not be addressed to in such a disrespectful manner". Then he stood next to the rich man and food, and died of hunger.
This story makes me think. Whenever there are hard times, especially for a country like China with a long history spanning many many years, therefore it has plenty of "opportunities" for events such as narrated above to happen, it's always the ones who had a highly developed sense of dignity dying first. This happens frequently enough and the net result is the removal from the gene pool of those who are dignified. This is why china is such a shit hole today. All the people of dignity have been culled.
