civil demand
Ok here's some background since i'm new. my friend has been shoplifting and scamming for profit daily over the past few years. I'm not trying to sound like a big-shot, this pertains to the situation. my friend has never been caught and probably lifted over 50k worth of merch in his lifetime,my friend only does it for cash, not items. So needless to say my friend has quite a bit of experience. Recently my friend was at a local supermarket where security is strong. my friend usually takes something small food-wise (only exception from the shoplifting for cash only statement). About 2 weeks ago my friend was pre-occupied on the phone and walked in the store and grabbed a chocolate milk, he was not in his work suit so may have appeared like a punk thus being watched as he's only 20yrs old and look even younger. He walked to the back of the store with milk in hand , not concealed. as he walked back to the front my friend swiftly threw the milk in a hoodie pocket in a register lane not even trying to be sneaky because of everything else he has gotten away with there, this was one of the smallest and most innocent lift he has ever done.
Now with that info maybe you can help me out here, he walked out and the lp (didnt know they even had lp ) came behind him in plain clothes and started talking to me about his shirt or some shit, then told him hes security and asked him to come back with him, my friend's a clean cut guy and has no past shoplifting charges so i figured he'd give a warning so my friend reluctantly walked back, could have ran but it wasn't worth the energy. Long story short he got a 75$ civil demand for a 1.50 milk, no charges, no police just some papers. LP said he had 10 days to pay, its been 20 and my friend has received nothing. Whats the best way to go about this without fucking up his credit, he's not worried about the fuzz, they don't even have his address. But he is worried about getting sent to collections and having to pay more or destroying my credit.
Any experience with what happens in the event of an unpaid civil demand will be appreciated, Thanks.
Edit: My friend is not trying to sound badass or anything of the sort. Just trying to get the point accross he is not completely retarted because this is one of my first posts and dont want to come off as a wanna be badass from the suburbs living with mommy. Im serious about this stuff but sometimes things are just overlooked and everybody gets sloppy at one point or another, luckily his was on a $1.50 item.

Edit: I just re-read the first paragraph and realized i sound like a wanna be bad ass. Im not bragging, it was strictly background info for the record so i dont get shit for gtn caught stealing $1.50 chocolate milk. i looked at it as a free item as opposed to stealing an item due to its price and nature of the item.

Wait, you claim to be a professional who stole 50k but got caught stealing a $1.50 thing of milk. Stupid Amateur

Re: civil demand
i forgot about that, ill edit now.
also he never stole 50k, it was accumulated over time as an estimate. it could be way off idk. As for being an armature, possibly, but when its something so small, personally he become careless. I assume most others might too, he barely looked at it as stealing. he does not claim to be a pro, but with years of experience in many different scams, lifts and burglaries, my friend still has a clean record. he is no where near professional but definitely not the worst. but this deserves a huge facepalm.
Just do me a favor and before i am judged and called an amateur, See what i know. I get the fact im new but ive been here longer than most since way before totse, i am not the type to sponge and ask to be spoon-fed so i did my research, developed some skill and 5 years later its time to give back. But there is nowhere else i can find the answer to this question in my particular situation.
he is not paying $75 to a store. its a fine but no legal actions were taken so should he pay or no? what are the consequences?

Re: civil demand
I am confused as to why you would not pay it. $75? This is a bargain compared to an offense on your record, if you shoplift on a regular basis.

Re: civil demand
Lol don't pay it. Your not obligated to, its a demand, not a claim. Kmart tryed to scare my friend sending countless demands saying if he don't pay $300 by this date then they'll take legal action, its been almost a year now and they stopped. Their not coming after u for a dollar

Re: civil demand
Yeah, for all they know his name could be fake! Crucially, without an address then his credit rating can't be touched and neither can he. Just tell em to go fuck themselves, they make enough money anyway without extorting more out of poor shoplifters!

Re: civil demand
haha they have his name, he refused to give them id but gave a credit card and social, so with social they can do shit but 75$ is a bargain compared to a theft record, but im pretty sure they wont press charges over $1.50 as it would cost about 500% more in court fees for them sooooo im just gunna say fuck em. they can press charges but it wastes their time and then there's no chance of them getting their money. the state would get it for his crime. not them. (i think)
