I have a good friend, who is female, and over the past month or so we've had an... affair... of sorts (her and her boyfriend "took a break" while he went abroad) and it was super good. We had amazing sex and were really just down to earth and friendly, unlike my last disaster of a 1.5 year relationship with a psychotic girl (like, diagnosed and everything) which I'd just gotten out of a week before fooling around with this girl.

Now, she and her boyfriend have broken up and she's saying things to me about how happy that month was for her and how she's still thinking about our nights together and so forth and I feel like she's about to tell me she loves me and we should be together. I don't want this! I don't want an exclusive relationship, Christ, I'd like to be single for once in my adult life, and I don't want another relationship because I'm so hurt from the last one. It might be cool at first but it won't end well and I'll be out a friend, a good one that I really value.

In short, the same old "let's not do this, I value our friendship too much."

So, I ask you, most socially adept Zoklet: how do I do this right?

And why the hell can't the girl be the one who's less invested in our relationship for once?

Furthermore fuck that, I don't want a relationship. I can't take another, I have other prospects I want to pursue (I haven't pursued someone in years, they've all fallen into my lap and latched on). Never said it was, just got a little angsty in the OP because of my track record of exactly that happening to me before I knew how to stop it.

It's hard to tell where we stand right now, but based on our most recent conversations I think her and I may be on the same page after all. It's just that every now and then she'll say something a little too "more than friends"-y for comfort, I want to be prepared for the eventuality where she decides we're meant to be or something.

The way you put it in the original post was quite a bit more eloquent than that cliche garbage. UPDATE: Everything's cool. Turns out she wants exactly what I do. At the time of my last post I suggested we have a little 'we need to talk' moment, and she got really vague about how she must've been mistaken about the past month and that she had this idea in her head that's been all wrong. I took this to mean I was right about her wanting to be more than friends.

When she elucidated in less vague terms, she explained basically that she wants to keep having sex and stuff but really enjoys me as a friend and only wants to take things one day at a time. It's a breath of fresh air from the "OKAY, NOW WE'RE GETTING MARRIED" that I'm used to.

It was a fucking disaster. She fell in love with me, just as I feared. I stuck with it because I didn't want to hurt my friend and I thought I loved her back? Nope.

Just dumped her two weeks ago, she is a mess. I mean just... wrecked. Everything I didn't want. All signs point towards "all women are ultra-clingy!!!" which I know is false (I think) but have yet to see the proof of.

Moral of the story, don't fuck your friends, and don't believe ANYONE when they say feelings won't be involved.
