I have no idea what you're talking about. I want to look at photos? Windows, I open "Preview" for quick looking; or perhaps a random program I downloaded off the internet to look at and organize it. In OS X, I can using "iPhoto" which does an excellent job.
|
The FUCK are you talking about? Just double click on a picture and it opens it in the regular Windows Photo Viewer. At least try not to flat out LIE about it.

Mac software is written for Macs. Windows software is for Windows. There's programs for both. I have yet to find a program for Windows that I like as much as iPhoto. It organizes my photos in various ways (date taken, by where it was taken, or by who is in it).
|
You can organize your photos any way you want in windows. Mac software is written for Mac, but these softwares are far scarcer and Mac's support is nowhere near that of Windows.
Quote:

I have nothing against linux - in fact, I ran it for years. The simple fact is I wanted it to be bit more automated, and I have little use for the customization. I find OS x and Windows enough to get my daily tasks done.
|
I've said this already. Windows is a more user friendly and accommodating Os. OSx is unnecessary, bloated and shit, though.
Quote:
|
I find OS x pretty "familiar". You want to open something, you click on it. I want to edit videos? iMovies. It's in the title. I want to listen to music? Everyone has heard of iTunes. Got to look at the calendar? iCal.
|
Anything gets familiar provided you use it enough, but it doesn't change the fact that it deviates for from a very well established UI schema (to which literally all OSes except Mac are made) for no good reason. Secondly, still bullshit reasoning. Windows comes with Windows Live Movie Maker (which is a very acceptable program for what it is), Windows Media Player and there's a calender in the taskbar (adding a lowercase "i" doesn't make it better). Again, bullshit reasoning, nothing you can't do with a PC.
Quote:
|
I agree on the weird command shortcuts - they take a little to get used to them. Some are familiar, but some are just strange.
|
At least you're slightly sensible.
Quote:
|
I think you're just an anti-mac fanboy. I can use all three - but OS x does everything the others do, that I do on a regular basis. I don't know why you must insult others who prefer something different - the world would be pretty boring if everyone agreed. The fact is that OS x is very similar to the others. I'm waiting for you to name a few things OS X can't do that the others can - or can't do as well.
|
First, here's why you're wrong; a "fanboy" would hate something irrationally. I hate OSx and I have a reason for hating OSx (it's unnecessarily partisan, it exists for literally no reason but for Apple to set itself apart. and offers no benefit to the end user).
Secondly, your reasoning is bullshit. It's that "it can do the same thing the other's do that I do on a regular basis". My problem is with that last part, where you're setting the parameters so you can move the goalposts because you can just define "what you do on a regular basis". Why is this bullshit? Because
A) your argument is that it can do the same things (rather than do anything better), which means at most, you can't PREFER OSx but choose not to hate it and
B) just because the only thing you compute on your computer is Farmville doesn't mean it makes what Mac CANNOT do irrelevant.
Your preference, by your OWN reasoning, is completely irrational. YOU are a Mac fanboy, so don't fucking act like you have a logical or moral high ground.
OSx is straight inferior to the others. As for examples; how about running a program not made for Lion without Apple having to code background VMs and eating system resources? How about not interfering with my print spooler? How about not allowing my phone to print via bluetooth because it can't store the auth key? How about the fact that you're talking about something doing the same thing (it doesn't) but for extra high prices?
Quote:
|
I don't like the "hipster" idea of the mac, but I'm not going to let that ruin it for me. I like how light my air is, and that it does what I need.
|
How about the fact that Macbook Airs start at $999 for an
11 inch screen (1366x768)
64 GB storage
1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core
4GB of DDR3L (hipster DDR3)
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Comparatively, I could buy the Vaio ultrabook for $799 and I'd get a
13.3 inch screen (1366x768)
32GB SSD + 500GB HDD
Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz
4GB DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000
That's $200 less for a statistically better laptop in every conceivable manner. The fuck is wrong with you?
Quote:
|
I have no current use for the Retina display. I don't see myself having one in the future, but things change. I won't be upgrading my Mac for at least 3-4 years, unless the unforeseen happens.
|
Again, at least you have an iota of sense for agreeing with me.
Quote:
|
You just want something to bitch about. I have used all 3 (I know there's more OS's out there, but main 3). Again - it's personal preference, which is nothing to make fun of. If I buy a Mac due to advertising and to be "hip", then yes - I'd be an idiot. I use it, like it, and that's why I picked it.
|
I've just proven how full of shit you are. Macs are, as I have stated and proven time and again, unnecessary and partisan. They do nothing better than other PCs, are overpriced and certainly do everything worse for a comparatively priced PC. Fuck off, you irrational and pathetic brand loyal sheep.

I'm not a fan of the lowercase "i" in front of everything. I know Windows comes with it most of them; these are built onto the screen. It's arguable better either way - whether adding it to the OS X dock; adding a desktop shortcut; or hitting start-->all programs--> (forget section) --> Windows Movie maker is easier. 1) Though it's not a big difference; I prefer a smaller screen. This is arguable - I hook it up to a big screen when I get home a lot of the time. This isn't a point for/against either.
2)Mine's 128gb; which is enough storage for me. I back up on a drive that both of my computers can read from. I also like SSD for a laptop since it's faster.
3) Can't argue cpu/ram as I'm unaware of the differences. I can say I've never had a RAM or a "wish this computer wasn't so slow" moment. I don't do intensive work on this.
4) The vaio apparently weighs 3.5 pounds. The air weighs 2.3 pounds. That's nothing to the average person - but I carry a lot of photography equipment around quite often so every little bit helps.
5) I like the OS better. It syncs with my phone nicely; I like the way it works, and the startup time is amazing.
6) I haven't read the entire review of the VAIO; but does it have a backlit keyboard? I find it very useful when typing in low-light areas, even though I rarely look at the keys.
With all the differences and preferences - I don't mind paying an extra $200 for a computer I like. I will easily have it for 4 years; $50 a year isn't too much money to get what you want. Especially when you use it every day.
Also - I treat my laptop computers fairly rough. I've had a Toshiba and an HP last 2-3 years, where my last Macbook (it was a Powerbook) lasted 6. I still have it and it boots - I just replaced it due to aging technology. This is based on my experience only.

Re: should I get a mac book or a PC?
PC;
- Virtually no compatibility issues, runs almost everything.
- Cheaper.
- Easier to upgrade/fix.
Mac;
- Makes you look like a hipster/indie wanker.
- Waste of money.
- Really expensive software.

sure, but iPhoto is organizationally and functionally absolutely no different from all the standard software that comes with Windows. All iPhoto is is a glossy pack-in that uses an unnecessary amount of resources for it's flashy interface.
I shouldn't have to repeat this to you; what you do or do not experience does not change what IS. It changes nothing for the documentedly less software support for Mac (alongside the limited driver support that ties down your upgrades to it). Yes, YOU may not play games on it. Does it lack that? Yes, it does. It doesn't play as many games or as well, just like it doesn't do many things as well as a Windows PC.

You said it, but it's not true.

It's definitely true and I've already stated this at least twice in this thread. Don't try to bullshit your way out of this one, faggot.

you know what? I won't even say anything. Instead, I'll take a screenshot of my desktop and show clearly that your knowledge of windows is outdated and shit. You're a sadly misinformed individual who seeks to argue with those who are not:
This is a screenshot of my desktop. See that shit on the right side? Fuck off.

Also, I was saying you can do basically everything on a Mac that you can on a PC; not that one is superior.

And my point is that that's no point of preference. If you prefer something, you are definitely saying it's better. That's why you prefer something. II shouldn't have to be your lexical coach on this one.
Also, I've shown more than a few times that Mac isn't equal but inferior.
Quote:
|
Just because you don't see value doesn't mean everyone feels that way.
|
You have yet to show me why one would see value in OSx at all, because up till now, you've given me nothing but stupid misinformed bullshit while I've shown you exactly why OSx is inferior (offers no benefit and plenty of downsides, tortures developers for cross-compatibility etc)
Quote:
|
Um, would it be more sensible for me to say "I do a lot of ___, and Macs do it well" or "I don't ever edit 3d movies, but I hear they can't do it"?
|
A) Macs can edit 3D movies, they just can't do it as well as a PC of a similar price can. Fine, it's an example. Moving on.
B) You're trying to use a hyperbolized example. Not many people edit 3D movies, but a massive load of people play video games, use Bubble Jet printers, use wireless broadband adapters, use gaming mice with dedicated softwares, the list goes on. And the point still stands that if it does nothing better, there is no reason to prefer it.
Quote:

Basically - there's nothing I do on a PC that I can't do on a Mac, and vice-versa. I don't have to switch OS's just to get something done (aside from scripts I've made that are one-OS friendly only, that's not a valid argument).
|
Issue still arises; you can't "prefer" Mac if there's no advantage. You keep saying the same shit, but to any intelligent person, you're saying "I bought an outrageously priced device for an OS that does the same thing as an OS on the non-outrageously priced device". You bought a $1000 Macbook Air that does nothing better than the $800 Vaio ultrabook and the only reason you've given me is that "it does the same thing". Irrational, no matter what way you look at it.

when it comes down to "what is a better OS", I don't need your experience. Issues exist here that don't exist on Windows. It's inferior.
Quote:

1) Though it's not a big difference; I prefer a smaller screen. This is arguable - I hook it up to a big screen when I get home a lot of the time. This isn't a point for/against either.

1) 2 inches doesn't reduce portability
2) Why would you NOT want a bigger screen?
3) it's $200 of a difference. Pay attention.

2)Mine's 128gb; which is enough storage for me. I back up on a drive that both of my computers can read from. I also like SSD for a laptop since it's faster.
|
Here, you're a fucking idiot again. Aside from bootup, you'll never see a performance difference between an SSD and a good HDD. The ultrabook had an SSD big enough for a windows install + 16 gigs of whatever programs you want on it, which I can assure you is more than enough. For your other files, there's literally no difference in performance and you get a shit-tonne more storage than a measly 128 GB.
Quote:

3) Can't argue cpu/ram as I'm unaware of the differences. I can say I've never had a RAM or a "wish this computer wasn't so slow" moment. I don't do intensive work on this.
|
The CPU is pretty much the same but I'm not sure if the Air has an Ivy Bridge chip like the ultrabook and the RAM is pretty much the same, DDR3L is just a more expensive low voltage variety of DDR3 (doesn't make a huge difference in battery either, from my calculations.)
Quote:
|
4) The vaio apparently weighs 3.5 pounds. The air weighs 2.3 pounds. That's nothing to the average person - but I carry a lot of photography equipment around quite often so every little bit helps.
|
I'm not even going to dignify this with a response. Suffice to say, you not being "the average person" has no bearing on the fact that the Air is an overpriced POS. Also, I don;t know what camera equipment you're carrying, but it can't weigh more than maybe 20 pounds or so. Even if it is, I'd just recommend you stop being a pussy.
Quote:
|
5) I like the OS better. It syncs with my phone nicely; I like the way it works, and the startup time is amazing.
|
The startup time is a function of the SSD, which the ultrabook also has.
Also, on Amazon it's even cheaper, clocking in at just under 725 bucks.
Quote:
|
6) I haven't read the entire review of the VAIO; but does it have a backlit keyboard? I find it very useful when typing in low-light areas, even though I rarely look at the keys.
|
No, but backlit keys rarely ever have full travel distance and often have poor registry (a notorious issue with the Air, although I guess it's solved by just getting used to typing a bit heavier). Also, for $200, you could probably just buy one of these and it'd be more power and cost efficient:

A) Don't treat your laptops like an idiot in any case
B) Macs are assembled alongside Toshibas and HPs in Foxconn's facilities from Foxconn's own mould catalogues and pretty much the same exact materials.
C) One could say the exact same thing in reverse (Macs have only lasted 2-3 years where their last Toshiba and HP lasted 6) and it would be exactly as valid proof as your statement.

16 gigs of SSD storage space doesn't seem like a lot. I prefer ALL my memory to be SSD. They take less power & corrupt less. I also use Thunderbolt in order to move my files quickly, which helps a lot. I know Thunderbolt is very expensive and won't last, but i didn't pay for mine (or else I wouldn't have it).

I read some complaints about the keyboard - but tested it myself before purchasing and actually like the keyboard. It feels very natural and I don't feel you have to press hard in order to achieve a keystroke. In fact, my boyfriends Dell feels like a typewriter where you practically have to hit the keys with a hammer just to get it working.

Paying extra for something you want isn't bad, especially low amounts. I bought a printer that has wifi printing instead of getting one with a cord; it was worth every penny to me.
I think spending a bit extra for a nice product (again, arguable nicer) isn't a big deal. I make enough money that $50 isn't much.

a) All laptops were in the exact same case because I like it (bought a new one with each laptop). The PC didn't survive; but the mac did. Macs have features such as moving the pin in the HDD when they notice a sudden drop. They also have magnetized power cords in case someone trips on it - it will unplug rather than fall.

Most of your evidence is strictly your opinion. Other than the specs you posted (which didn't include things like battery life….) you've posted opinions.
Just remember - I haven't said PCs are worse than Macs. I simply think Macs shouldn't be discounted so quickly and people being told they're being dumb/"faggots" for buying a product that works well.

What the fuck do you mean "works as well"? Windows Live Media Center, for one, can organize your shit whichever way you want it. Again, you keep throwing out stupid, vague questions as responses and expect to gain ground through development.

The only thing you've replied with is anecdotal bullshit and and retracted into "well, I don't do X or Y and therefore the issue doesn't exist"

|
Preferring all your storage in solid state just cements how retarded you are for speaking out of your ass and understanding what a colossal waste of money it is to have 128 measly gigs to fill out and all of it in solid state so all that speed can be diverted to opening your 3 meg pictures. Thunderbolt is a proprietary port and you're, again, a fucking retard because about 5 devices support thunderbolt and I don't even know what huge quantities you're transferring to and from your pint sized 128 gig SSD. (note, the 128 gig one is more expensive, so I could bring up a more expensive ultra book, but I won't need to because having 64 extra gigs of storage won't help the Mac much anyway)

|
I'm just going to point out that you're an idiot if you think key travel is a bad thing. Also, you must have weird retarded fingers if any keyboard "feels like a typewriter" to you. Either that or you've never used a typewriter.

Paying extra for something you want isn't bad, especially low amounts. I bought a printer that has wifi printing instead of getting one with a cord; it was worth every penny to me.
|
Except while a wifi printer has an actual advantage, I've already demonstrated your "want" for the Air is irrational and dumb. The only justification you've given is, till this point, that "it does the same things" which A) it doesn't and B) is a stupid reason because if you could have gotten something that did the same thing for 200 dollars less, how do you justify saying it's not an inferior purchase?
Quote:
|
I think spending a bit extra for a nice product (again, arguable nicer) isn't a big deal. I make enough money that $50 isn't much.
|
It's not a nicer product by any metric. The point isn't the $200, it's that you spent an extra $200 on something you yourself can't give me a single advantage of over the thing you WOULDN'T spend an extra $200 for.

a) All laptops were in the exact same case because I like it (bought a new one with each laptop). The PC didn't survive; but the mac did. Macs have features such as moving the pin in the HDD when they notice a sudden drop. They also have magnetized power cords in case someone trips on it - it will unplug rather than fall.
|
And my father's nephew's cousin had a macbook air that he kept in the same case as an ultrabook and the macbook didn't survive and the HP and Dell ones did. There we go, polarly opposite "proof".
Don't call source on something as commonly known as the Dodgers, faggot.

I don't give a shit about you. This discussion is about Macs vs other PCs, not the preferences of some bitch on the internet I don't give a fuck about. That sentence wasn't your "opinion", it was "based on your experience" and the point of my post was to point out that I simply don't give a shit about your experience when we;re talking about the quality of Macs.
Quote:
|
Most of your evidence is strictly your opinion. Other than the specs you posted (which didn't include things like battery life….) you've posted opinions.
|
You're a fucking idiot. Point out to me one piece of reasoning I've given that's based on preference rather than fact.
Quote:
|
Just remember - I haven't said PCs are worse than Macs. I simply think Macs shouldn't be discounted so quickly and people being told they're being dumb/"faggots" for buying a product that works well.
|
And I said Macs are worse than PCs because the product DOESN'T work as well and as I've already said, is overpriced for it's specifications, while the OS also doesn't give you any advantage.
TL;DR you're beating around the bush and trying to avoid the fact that you're full of shit here and you yourself have said nothing more than that you've paid an extra 200 dollars for something that is functionally not suprior to the thing that does it as well (and which is better than Mac, as I've already shown.

Battery life is better (from reviews I read), the magnetized power cord is great as well.
I find the speed faster when I looking through items on my SSD; even when compared to a similar computer with a regular HHD.
I would have never bought a Thunderbolt Drive; however by moving large amounts of data (around 80 gb) to and from the Mac every day, about 6 times a day, it's very helpful.
I don't care WHERE my computer is made. They use different materials for different computers.
Paying extra for something I highly prefer isn't a bad decision. I'm also used to many of the functions on a Mac. Again - you haven't named anything a PC can do that a Mac can't. I am speaking as a business user - but feel free to give any example. It does have games, I know not nearly as many - that's not important to everyone.

pretty big waste at the moment, IMO. Most of our shit's probably just movies, music and photos. a good 7200 drive should be more than sufficient as storage.

This right there tells you the mentality of Mac people. A tablet to replace a computer. LOL. Anyone stupid enough to eat that shit up needs to be neutered. Macs are overpriced pieces of garbage with an absolutely TERRIBLE OS and very few free options. You have to pay for everything you do on a mac. I wouldn't be surprised if they started charging for moving your mouse or like $1.00 per 300 keystrokes on your keyboard.
Get a desktop. ANY desktop. It doesn't really matter. If you go with an OEM machine (i.e. Mac, Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, etc.) it's going to be shit and won't last you very long. But at least if it's a desktop when the cheapo Chinese motherboard blows out it will only be $50 for a replacement.
But your best bet would be to pay a shop to build you a custom computer. You'll save a few bucks and get a machine with a 3 year warranty and tons of great features.

yeah exactly, fuck, I cannot believe so many people don't understand that. they compare the specs you get for your money, but happen to forget that you don't spend you day stroking you new hardware like it's your dick, you use the fucking OS. and a PC can't run OS X (hackintoshes are different, they involve strict hardware and hacking shit), which is a big factor IF you prefer it to window.

4) If you're not going to upgrade your PC; Mac is fine. I know you CAN upgrade it, but they're less accessible.

certainly, though i'd also say that every Mac Pro and Power Mac G3/G4/G5 is easy as fuck to upgrade or replace stuff. Except for the ones with liquid cooling. They are not fun. Macbooks are pretty easy to fix too, by that I mean the cute white ones.

Apparently the Retina Display Mac is nearly impossible to upgrade.

Yeah
they better not discontinue the normal Pro without at least finding a way to make the retina ones have replaceable memory and hard drive at least. Apple totally rape you with their memory and disk prices...

Applescript is for writing little scripts to automate stuff, I've found that apple's Xcode is awesomely easy to write stuff in C++ or whatever. Not that I'm good with C++, but I can kinda stumble through it

It isn't as light as Linux can be, it has less support than windows and genuinely offers not a single advantage to using it aside from hipster cred. Mac is an idiot's platform that survives less because of it's actual utility and quality and more because Apple has an admittedly brilliant marketing campaign.

Not a single advantage? It can run OS X, plus any version of Windows or any distro of linux, through virtualisation. And I've never had any problems dual booting Windows XP/Vista/7, plus apple hand you the drivers (which you can upgrade yourself, overclock etc) so you don't have to deal with the initial setup crap.

it exists because apple wanted a newer OS, if anything that applies more to windows, after all the Mac OS was around before Windows, maybe IBM could've just tried to license Mac OS?

Compatibility issues are even worse for OSx, seeing as BSD Wine is worth even less of a shit than Linux WINE. Also, usability depends on the distro. Ubunru is dead simple to use and it has a really nice UI. I actually prefer the UI to Windows.

And any given PC can run Hackintosh, what's your point?
And I'm not sure how "upgrading yourself" is an advantage over other PCs, you can update those drivers yourself too. And overclocking has nothing to do with drivers, I can overclock shit from my BIOS without a problem and any intel computer with a turboboost capable chip can just run turbo boost, Mac or otherwise. Also, "initial setup crap"? Are you shitting me? You literally need to do nothing more than insert your setup discs and maybe google for a driver or two that didn't come with your components. In short, this is the same "but I am le tired" crap people hate Macs for in the first place.

No, you will literally never see the difference, it's invisible to the naked eye after about a foot from the screen. It doesn't look any better than a decent 1080p monitor would. It's fucktards llike yourself who look at the background Apple purposely preloads with a variety of vibrant hues to trick you into thinking there's something different about it. There isn't. In fact, a retina display doesn't even cost THAT MUCH. the sole purpose for it's inclusion is that retards like you look at their buzzwords and actually delude themselves into thinking it looks better, when you literally cannot see the difference.

No, not at all. As of right now, my PC is using maybe 2GB of my 8GB memory because I have several processes on the fly right now. But the Mac at my workplace running Lion starts up cumgargling at least 2 GB of RAM. Hell, look at the sysreqs for Win7 and Lion.

You know what Windows' market share is and has been for decades? It sits somewhere around 94%. Most Linux distros use the same scheme for the UI, it's a very well established and a tried and tested system that has worked well and will work well for the forseeable future. Also, you're a fucking idiot; MS came first as a company by about a year and co-developed the Apple II's Z80 and they both co-developed Applesoft BASIC. In a lot of ways, MS and Apple are intertwined at their roots, but Steve Jobs still stole that shit from Xerox.

You're a fucking idiot; Lion applications will not run on older versions of OSx and older version applications will not run on Lion. To do so, one needs to use the Baccod VM, eating a metric shit-tonne of resources.
Also, what "Mac Software"? The vast majority of software is written for Windows.
Can OSx run Windows software? Not without BSD Wine, but it's nowhere near as... user friendly (and eats up too many resources and has many, many bugs and is undersupported)

"The awesome engineering"? Please do enlighten me. As I've stated time and again, if you prefer OSx to Windows, your preference is wrong and irrational; preferring something means it does something better, which OSx does not do in any way. Also, Hackintosh if you want to satiate your irrational preference anyway.

Compatibility issues are even worse for OSx, seeing as BSD Wine is worth even less of a shit than Linux WINE. Also, usability depends on the distro. Ubunru is dead simple to use and it has a really nice UI. I actually prefer the UI to Windows.

Doesn't Ubuntu have a dock?

I'm not sure what you see in OSX at this point, the Magic Trackpad is pretty much the centre of the UI since Lion.

I use a trackpad on a laptop; but it's the same thing. Many people prefer it. Using two fingers = right clicking.

And any given PC can run Hackintosh, what's your point?

I haven't seen an example of one working properly.

|
Both are equally easy to set up - in most cases. Due to the mass availability of components for Windows, I'd argue this can be harder. I've spent longer searching for Windows drivers than looking for compatibility solutions for the Mac.
Quote:

No, not at all. As of right now, my PC is using maybe 2GB of my 8GB memory because I have several processes on the fly right now. But the Mac at my workplace running Lion starts up cumgargling at least 2 GB of RAM. Hell, look at the sysreqs for Win7 and Lion.
|
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong charts; but I'm seeing they're pretty damn similar. Windows wants 25 gb of free space though, which is more than Mac.
Quote:

You know what Windows' market share is and has been for decades? It sits somewhere around 94%. Most Linux distros use the same scheme for the UI, it's a very well established and a tried and tested system that has worked well and will work well for the forseeable future. Also, you're a fucking idiot; MS came first as a company by about a year and co-developed the Apple II's Z80 and they both co-developed Applesoft BASIC. In a lot of ways, MS and Apple are intertwined at their roots, but Steve Jobs still stole that shit from Xerox.
|
Market share doesn't always tell you everything.
Quote:
|
You're a fucking idiot; Lion applications will not run on older versions of OSx and older version applications will not run on Lion. To do so, one needs to use the Baccod VM, eating a metric shit-tonne of resources.
|
Everything I've ever used on a Mac has been upgraded to work with Lion. I've been using them for roughly 11 years.
Quote:
Also, what "Mac Software"? The vast majority of software is written for Windows.
Can OSx run Windows software? Not without BSD Wine, but it's nowhere near as... user friendly (and eats up too many resources and has many, many bugs and is undersupported)
|
So... [facts completely made up] The vast majority of cars driven in Canada were made in America. Therefore, European cars don't exist.
Just because there is less of something doesn't really mean much. Why do I need 80 different programs for music when the 2-3 that are available all work?
Quote:
|
"The awesome engineering"? Please do enlighten me. As I've stated time and again, if you prefer OSx to Windows, your preference is wrong and irrational; preferring something means it does something better, which OSx does not do in any way. Also, Hackintosh if you want to satiate your irrational preference anyway.
|
No, it means my preference is difference than yours. If I tell you my favourite colour is blue, you can't say "lol no you're dumb red is better".
Quote:
|
Yeah and I can technically go and smash-and-grab a PC for FREE and make it a Hackintosh for FREE! Because if we're getting into the illegal, any line you draw past that point is arbitrary.
|
Agreed.

Re: should I get a mac book or a PC?
The whole bad forward/backward compatibility thing with OS X isn't really all that different from the situation present on apt-based linux distros. It's just a bigger issue on OS X because they not only impose more control on it, but there are also greater changes from version to version. You'd be lucky to get a sound/video intense program from 10 years ago on linux without some kind of virtual environment.

Gestures actually work very well - and Windows computers often use them to. On a web page and want to to back? Two fingers right. Want to scroll down? Scroll down with two fingers.

The *BSD teams use their own BSD copyright which is basically 'do whatever you want with our code, we don't give a fuck'
*oh and I meant the nextstep platform was almost totally lifted from freebsd

Assuming you have a larger screen, a higher resolution makes sense. On a 15 inch screen, it makes NO sense from either a performance or visual perspective. And if you want a high res screen on a desktop, you can buy SO many more affordable solutions. The cheapest Mac with a more-than-1080p monitor is $1700.
The mac:
2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
2560 x 1440 resolution (27")
4GB (two 2GB) memory
1TB hard drive1
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB
No optical drive
shitty fucking keyboard and mouse from apple
Those specs are fucking hilarious. Seriously.
Here's a PC with the same price:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bGtK
Needless to ssay, it heel-drops the Mac into a coma with a faster proc, twice the RAM and 8 times the VRAM (and if you want tweaks, you can alter the ridiculously OP 4 GB crossfired 7770s)

Although I do agree it's overhyped, but I can respect that Apple was the first to start really pushing forward this technology in computers.
|
It's not "overhyped" it's fucking USELESS. It's not pushing forward any techology worth a shit. A laptop will never need a resolution higher than 1080p because our eyes can't distinguish it from a regular viewing distance. This isn't one of those statements I'll be eating 10 years from now like Bill Gates saying 256 MB RAM is all we'll ever need. No, our eyes are literally the limit for this. It's like those stupid 7200 DPI gaming mice; our hands can't twitch in small enough motions to use 7200 dots in a fucking inch, it's a limitation on OUR hardware.
Quote:
|
Yeah Lion is a bit bloated with shit, I've shut off most of its' extraneous crap actually, it's amazing how much pretty effects can bog an old computer down... but at least it does scale well down to low memory machines, it likes to expand as much as it can to be as efficient as it can.
|
It's not efficient ever. I never have to turn off Aero because my machine can't handle 5 windows at once with it on. That's never happened.
Not really the point
Quote:
|
No... it's taken from tech developed at nextstep... made by steve jobs (who is basically a fucking human apple), and yes, they stole unix code, lolz win
|
LOL. Also they didn't "steal Unix code" you dumb faggot. They took Unix philosophy i.e. "write software that does one thing well".
Quote:
lolwut?
THe only things it won't run are Power PC coded *only* applications... nearly everything was updated or upgraded or has a new version. Does piss me off though that I can't play Diablo 2. FUCK. But yeah, it plays the Windows version with WINE/Crossover like a charm.
|
Again, safari and Autodesk aren't the hard limit for software. Windows runs everything fine and you don't need to update your software every few years to make it not just break.
Quote:
|
Ironically the catergory of "Mac software" started out including MS Word and Photoshop.
|
Stop living in 1985. There's barely any "Mac Software" around at all. Everything is coded for Windows.
Quote:
|
Yeah probably, but Codeweavers Crossover (although commercial) has a lot of support, it even managed to run most things for me back in 2007.
|
Don't need that broken bullshit.
Quote:
|
Nah I quit because Apple used to maybe be cool and laid back, but now it's actually really strict and they're like emos, brainwashed into acting the same kind of "different", aka faggot hipster.
|
I repeat; I see that your commitment to your gay hipster former employers has not died.
Quote:
|
Actually I agree with this, with a Mac it's at least cut and dry, either it works, it doesn't work, or it works with some kind of hack, with Windows, it adds the extra option of "says it works but doesn't and then who knows WTF is going on"
|
100% vague bullshit, 0% sensible.
Quote:
|
Exactly, that's like bashing Ferrari for having 0.1% of the car marketplace or something.
|
You're a fucking idiot, that analogy isn't even halfway correct. Ferrari isn't selling underperforming cars with a shiny case for extra cost and Ferrari isn't using octagonal wheels for no reason other than to be partisan, so you have to specially develop octagonal wheels to work with Ferraris/
Quote:
|
And if they aren't then they're very fucking old, and therefore WINE/Crossover will run them like a champ.
|
Again, 100% horseshit. Even simple shit like Irfanview ends up shitting on GIF compression. Autodesk wares run like steaming piles of shit, for example.
Already addressed, fuck you
Quote:
|
Mac parts? Intel CPUs, WD disks, Crucial memory, etc etc. my Mac right now is running a PC ATI Fire GL X3. And it's 8 years old.
|
Fuck-king retaaaaaaaard. The point was that as long as you have the same parts as are supported on regular macs, hackintosh will run A+
Quote:
|
Same with a Mac. Although most Mac users don't know how to find the hardware name of the component.
|
i.e. Mac isn't really any easier to set up? You concede?
Quote:
|
Never heard of it. And Macs will have something that does the same thing at least as well.
|
A) You're a fucking retard if you haven't even heard of irfanview
B) iPhoto does not will not ever handle GIFs like Irfanview can.
.
Not at all and gestures work with Windows but are nowhere near the central focus of the UI like Lion. It's one thing to be able to use gestures, a whole other to have your OS based around your shitty magic trackpad. On top of that, most Windows gestures are implemented on a case-by-case basis by the brand. For example, my Vaio laptop has no "back" gesture while my old Qosmio has a whole background launcher on the touchpad.
Quote:
|
Yup, for proper gaming I do use Windows.
|
Again, the argument here was that "it meets my needs", not "it's superior" in any fucking way i.e. his preference for it is irrational and fucking retarded since it costs a couple hundred bucks to get his irrational preference.

True, I did see a retina MBP recently and although it was pretty, it wasn't mind blowing... and at that, it was running Apple-only stuff, handpicked for their demos. I hate to think how playing any kind of modern game would be.

2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
2560 x 1440 resolution (27")
4GB (two 2GB) memory
1TB hard drive1
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB
No optical drive
shitty fucking keyboard and mouse from apple
Those specs are fucking hilarious. Seriously.
Here's a PC with the same price:

I totally agree with you. But if you want to run OS X painlessly and easily, you have to pay up or you're left out in the cold.
I've never paid more than $400 for a Mac. That was a 2008 Macbook, which I stuck an SSD in. Next most expensive was an 8 year old tower for $150. I'm not dumb enough to buy a Mac brand new, I'd only do that if I were filthy rich.
Look, I like Macs but I'm not some macfag, I know where they suck, but I prefer them so I've made a point to work a way around any crap Apple brings out. I like Macs for everyday shit, Windows for games, and Backtrack linux when I really need to borrow someone elses' internets

SSD's are fail. Google SSD failure and you will understand what I am saying. I hate Macs now. I used to adore them but Apple is a giantic FUCKTARD Company the products are shitty at best if compared by price. I would prefer building my own system.
Plus you can use Mac OSX on your Intel based system anyway.

While I could repeat myself yet again, I know that arguing with you on this point simply won't be fruitful, as you just don't want to listen to reason.

You. Are. A. Fucking. Retard.
LCDs are now the standard because not only can they run in digital properly, but they don't need huge tubes in the back, are much lighter, cheaper to make and don't need to expand backwards as the expand in screen size annd resolution. On a 15 inch notebook, your eye can literally not see that resolution past about a foot away from the screen. It's useless.
Quote:
|
Our eyes max out around 30 megapixels, apparently. Got a way to go yet.

You're a fucking retard. Our eyes aren't measured in megapixels, pixels are the units of light that appear on a monitor that actually uses pixels. The closest equicalent would be the smallest degree of detail we can see, which, again, depends on distance. The reason why Retina displays exist on iPhones is because you're necessarily closer to the screen and Apple wanted you to not see all the jaggies when you're up close. On a 15 inch screen, you will literally never see the difference from more than about a foot or two away.

Generally, when one buys a Ferrari, they buy it because they want a fast and street legal car that doesn't make you look like a fucking retard. Nobody buys this shit to drive around in:
Quote:
|
Yeah, but it looks like as compared to one. See where I'm going?
|
What? As I already said, that's not even a proper fucking analogy. Is the Ariel Atom here an IBM Watson server? The Mac is in no way comparable to a Ferrari because Ferraris deliver top of the line performance and actually sell to very select drivers who arrive with recommendations, as opposed to Macs, which deliver subpar performance and sell to every shitty college student who just wants a $1000 facebook machine. Your entire argument is based on making shitty, incorrect analogies in an attempt to illustrate your shitty, incorrect point.

Intel SSD's are really reliable with 5 year warranty. Plus they are among the fastest drives.
As one guy put it, yes they're still unstable, but they're still worth it because they're putting out like 500 mb/s sequential read/write with Sata III. That's over double what a 10,000 RPM would put out.
They're one of the best upgrades you can make for a computer.
