Yugo SKS owners
I just picked up a Yugo m59/66 A1 at a gun show a little while back. It was in pretty good condition, near unissued, with a blonde stock and a shining bore. Took it to the range a few times with some cheap Russian ammo and did pretty well at 100 yards. I was fairly happy with my groups considering i wasn't using quality ammo or a rest and was shooting fairly fast. I did notice it shoots far off to the right, and that the front sight post is almost all the way to the right so some adjustments are necessary.
Any other owners out there have any tips or just wanna share info on this amazing rifle.

That's my baby

Re: Yugo SKS owners
Mine shoots fine with Wolf ammo. If you buy an hi cap mag for it, the Matco 30 rd steel ones work well. I've had some bad luck with the Tapco type polymer ones.

Re: Yugo SKS owners
I hate SKS's they are only accurate to about 100y and the cost of them is astronomical. I wish I would have gotten one when they were $100 because now they go for $300-$600 for some ungodly reason. You could have bought a nice AK for a similar price and had a much better rifle.

Re: Yugo SKS owners
I got an SKS that was gunked up with a fuck load of cosmoline so I took it apart and let the metal sit in gasoline for a while. When I took it out and wiped it off the metal was like new. I then took rem oil and wiped every single part of the metal and wood. Shooting it probably burned off the rest of the oil in the barrel idk.
I then got a damp cloth and an iron so I could iron out the cosmoline from the wood. This left it nice and bare instead of gunky.
I then filed off the big ass knife on the front, which shifted the weight to the back, making it 10 times more maneuverable and light. Unfortunately if you shoot it enough times the barrel heats up badly and starts turning to the side, making it inaccurate as fuck so I handed it down to my brother. I also gave him my AK47 for his birthday.
I like my M4 much more than the AK or the SKS. It's light, accurate, doesn't jam, and looks cooler.
I also got a 1911 that I don't like because it only has 8 shots, it's heavy, a bitch to take apart, and it's right handed only. I'll most likely give that to my bro as well and pick up a nice Beretta 92A1
edit: typed it out while sober and got the facts ass backwards

Re: Yugo SKS owners
I've been considering buying an SKS for a few years now...do you guys have any tips? Is there anything specific to SKS's that I should consider when looking to buy one?

Yeah, they're now as expensive as decent AK's so there's almost no point in buying one. A few years ago they cost as much as surplus mosin nagants go for nowadays.

Re: Yugo SKS owners
I know the price of SKS's has gone up recently, but my gun collection needs some more soviet stuff. I would try to find a cheap one...like from a pawn shop or on backpage...probably not from a dealer

I just wanted an sks because its a reliable semi automatic rifle, and it is just as accurate if not more than an ak. An AK is a great rifle, but something about a semi auto only assault rifle feels kind of pointless. Besides I'd rather use chargers until I run out, and load a few rounds quickly into the non detachable mag, than constantly load 30 rd mags. I was however drooling over some perfectly cleaned and spotless polish tantals for $466, but i was just $100 or so short.

True kind of pointless but the only thing to keep you from making it into a real AK-47 is a hole, a few easily found parts and some silly laws.
I had a yugo sks. Got it like in 2005 for $160. Foolishly tried to make it into an Ak-47. Detatchable mags dont work. If they did it would be cool because I agree with you stripper clips>detatchable magazines. If you could find one that worked, I would just duct tape that bitch in there and use stripper clips with it. It would be cool, but still couldn't bring myself to do it as expensive as they are now and how cheap they were. It would still be useful in a combat situation. There are plenty of situations semi-automatic is better. But I would want more than 10 rounds in it.
My yugo had glow in the dark sights which was cool.

Re: Yugo SKS owners
SKSs are solid firearms. It's a shame the price has inflated, but they are good shooters for something mass produced for illiterate peasants.
Just treat it like what it is. Don't try to add a bunch of aftermarket crap or make it an AK or a sniper rifle or, God forbid, put M4-style hardware on it.
Clean it, leave it stock, and it will work. It's a solid design.

Re: Yugo SKS owners
I have a bunch of them leftover from the Bosnian war. Whenever I'm there I take one one to shoot at foxes and other vermin. The M70 is more fun though, especially with one of these:

That grenade would likely kill you as well. I've only fired a grenade from an AK/SKS a handful of times and something always cocked up. Either the thing didn't fire properly, I hurt my hand, the grenade only went a couple meters, it didn't explode on contact, whatever. The worst thing was when we fired one into some muddy river close to a bank where kids often played and the fucker didn't go off. Epic derp moment.

Chicom has made 20 round fixed mags that work well with strippers (hit or miss with them however). Look a little ugly though, but every mans got his tastes.

Has anyone fitted their sks with a tapco polymere stock. I am thinking about getting one just in case i have to drag it out in the bush. I wouldn't ever want to tarnish my blonde stock, and truoil only offers so much protection.

I've handled a few of the M4 ones for the SKS, they suck.
If you want something solid, check out Choate's offerings.

Re: Yugo SKS owners
in Canada you can buy an SKS for like $160, they put a plug in the magazine so you can only put 5 rounds in them. However the plugs tend to fall out very easily xD

You're right, for what it is and what you want it for, it's a great gun. I don't know why I said all that, I was probably just in a bad mood haha. I don't hate sks's as much as I hate the people who buy norinco's and put the poly black "tactical" stocks and all the tacti-cool garbage they make for them. Leave it OG and it will treat you well the Yugo's are fine sks's.

Re: Yugo SKS owners
Im really regretting that I let my friend sell his yugo back to the gun store for $140, considering that I couldve given him like $80 worth of drugs for it, and the fact that prices on sks now are almost up there with high-end used guns.
For some reason, a lot of people tend to frown on the yugos though, preferring russians. It really sucks too, because now I have some money, and im looking for a relatively cheap, decently-powered, very reliable end of the world/ survival battle rifle. All the other things that are cali legal and in the same category - like the springfield armory M1A series- are ungodly expensive. So Im probably going to have to buy another SKS- for 5x the price it was. Also considering a saiga. That SOCOM though, though expensive- can do double duty as a deer rifle/ medium range engagement weapon if you pair it with the right optics. Still....$2,000+ for a 10-round semi-auto....ouch.
