Fallout 2 question
So after watching Mad Max 2 the other night I dug out my copy of Fallout Collection and installed F2 and I'm gonna play through it and finally finish it.
Now before I start playing I was wondering if I should just patch it to 1.02 and play through or should I install the Restoration Project patch. I've never actually played that far into F2 before (I've finished F1 and Tactics) so I haven't seen much of the game.
So my question is should I play through 1.02 first and then install the restoration patch or should I just install the restoration patch and play it??

Re: Fallout 2 question
I say patch it, and play through it the normal way first.
The restoration project is great, but it has its bugs, and adds a different spin on the game. It's a little ambitious and seems to add in some unfinished locations as well as some locations being vague on what there is to do there.

Thanks for the reply.
I installed it the other day and patched it to 1.02 and started playing through.

I rather watch book of eli than mad max 3 anyday, the story to mm3 was childish.
I thought book of eli had its moments, I thought the fight scenes were decent and it had a good atmosphere but the story was just plain stupid.

Fuck yeah. That game had a respectable learning curve.
The first time I tried it, I fucked off the game for a year before fallout 3 was ready to come out. I played through part 2 prepping for part three, and while part 2 delivered amazing memories, Fallout 3 was shit--And I was one of the faggots looking forward to "Oblivion with guns." Too bad they fucked up BOTH concepts.
Fallout 2 has a few rough edges, but it stands as one of the best PC games of all time. It is a throwback to when PC games existed.

Nope, it was the Temple of Trials. I couldn't even figure out where to go at first. Door was locked, no lockpicking skills. At least, I think that that's where I screwed.
I did play the first game quite a bit. Loved it as well.

Re: Fallout 2 question
Started playing Fallout 2 again. One of the reasons I failed so hard the first time around is because I wanted to be good at everything, I think. Now, I have a character:
S: 6 or 7
P: 9 or 10
E: 5
C: 2
I: 9 or 10
A: 10
L: 6
(Gifted is a must-have trait)
And it's working out way better. I actually succeed at killing stuff. Making money and getting equipment by stealing everything. I don't miss charisma at all. I'm basically trying to achieve a point where 1 well aimed shot in the eyes/head = 1 kill. I'm only level 6 right now though. Shooting slavers through the eyeball with my .44 magnum kicks ass.
Has anyone ever tried Fonline? I did with a friend. We came to the conclusion that there was fuck-all to do. Maybe you have other experiences?

I played it on a lap top, funnest fucking game ever. Seriously.
I wish Fallout 3 was done in the same style as Fallout 2, I don't like the Elder Scrolls clone bullshit. Fallout tactics was meeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
You gotta get the restoration patch, the EPA is the awesome, you can find weed their and smoke it. I forget what it does but I think it ups your perception and lowers your charisma or something like that

Re: Fallout 2 question
Fallout 3 was meh at best. It really did feel like they just took Oblivion, emptied the world a bit, threw some rubble around and strapped guns on the NPC's. Oh, and rubbed the lens with green vaseline. There was nothing of what made the original Fallout games fun.
Fallout New Vegas was a huge, HUGE step forward in terms of getting the Fallout feel. I loved the Mojave. Combined with some mods, it makes one of the best games ever. I installed Imp's More Complex Needs, a better weather mod and something that added a weatherstation to your pipboy. Project Nevada added some cool things too.
With all those mods, New Vegas is the most immersive game ever. IMCN-mod is like a more hardcore version of hardcore mode. You have to eat, drink and sleep to stay alive, but you have to watch nutritionlevels too. Go around eating nothing junkfood and you'll grow fat and slow down. Having a higher protein level gives bonuses. Being up past your bedtime too long gives you penalties. That's just a few things. The guy that made this is fucking insane. All values for nutrition are based on real numbers. There are lots and LOTS of penalties and bonuses based on your eating and sleeping habits. It notifies you when you are thirsty by making you cough and when you're hungry your stomach will growl. Which is bad for sneaking.
The weather mod replicates the real life weather of the Mojave desert and makes it more realistic. It also adds sandstorms and radiation storms and makes nights near pitchblack and impossible to move through. See, the cool thing about these last two mods is that they work together perfectly. When it's hotter, you'll get more thirsty and your calories (and other nutritional values) will drop quicker. So going through the Mojave without any water or food at hand is a bad idea. Fortunately, IMCN lets you bottle water when you have empty bottles.
Then there's a mod that enables you to carry a sleeping bag and a portable campfire. So when you're going through the Mojave and you know night is coming, you throw down your sleeping bag and sleep. If you haven't eaten yet, you can hunt for some gecko or brahmin and cook a steak on the campfire. Food spoils though, so you can't carry it around forever. Some food even spoils more rapidly than others. Uncooked meat spoils after a day, fruits and vegetables after a week.
Project Nevada adds a lot of things. Like, alot. It adds bullettime based on your AP. If you wear goggles, a lens comes over the screen. If you wear damaged goggles, you see cracks. Wear sunglasses, and the screen gets darker. It adds a seperate button to throw weapons like spears or grenades. It adds a shit ton of stuff.
Some people asked me how I can think this is more fun. Well, I just do.

thats why i like RPGs. the bethesda games are cool, and I like NV, but I find even in that game you can be a master of all trades and I dont like that. The 'roleplaying' is gone when you can do everyhing.

Welcome to how the fucked up Skyrim by having Smithing/Enchanting being way too powerful and not putting enough good gear out in the game world.
I agree that while FO3 was good, it was a major disappointment to the franchise. Really a piss poor game from a RPG perspective. Way too easy. I felt like I had to use VATS because the aiming really wasn't that tight, but eventually VATS felt like cheating...

Being level one and having the ability to get max level smithing kinda broke it for me.
And vats pretty much is cheating.
Though, some people just fucking suck at gaming. A friend of mine was playing it the other day, so I checked out her stuff and watched her play a bit. Easiest difficulty, best guns, yet she can't aim at a supermutant a few feet in front of her, and ALWAYS uses vats. ALWAYS. If she's out of action points, she runs and screams from every enemy

It gets more intuitive after a little bit.
At first you feel it's just an "aged"game that doesn't know any better, then after a while you realize the developers knew exactly what they were doing.

Make sure your Agility is 10.
All the other stats you can play about with however you like but Agility ALWAYS has to be 10. (and Strength 6)

I'm pretty sure you can get a bonus to both those stats without wasting a perk choice. I know for a fact you can upgrade your strength in the Brotherhood Of Steel bunker if you have the upgrade microchip thing.
It's best to just experience the game with zero prior knowledge, but if you're going through your second run, it's nice to know what stats will get upgraded throughout the course of your game.

Re: Fallout 2 question
Two doesn't continue from one storywise so doesn't matter really. There is a few references to one in two and one is pretty short so may as well just play it, I think two is the best though.

fallout 3 came out exactly 10 years after fallout 2. Fallout 3 wasn't even made by black isle studios. U saying you put off playing fallout 2 for 10 years?

Yeah. I didn't know of its existence till Fallout 3 started getting some publicity.
I have never been PC game savvy, and had only recently acquired a computer of my own.

If you're not in combat, you just keep clicking on new locations and your character will keep running to them.
You can also just click and hold in the direction you want to go, but I never really liked doing that.
If you are in combat, your action points dictate how many steps you can move. Agility is a very important skill.

Re: Fallout 2 question
If you want to run to a location, hold shift while clicking. That goes for both combat mode and 'normal' mode.
Combat mode can be toggled by pressing Q, clicking on the little button on the right hand corner of the screen or by pressing the large button with the equipped item.
Right-clicking toggles a series of different actions, like move or see, or attack in combat mode.
Here's the whole manual. Not to be a dick, but if you can't figure out movement, I think there are quite some other things you won't find out.
