We can't grasp at the amount of time it took for all these species to live and die and fill some ecological niche here on this planet because of our short lifespans, but imagine the process of having something that looked like a tadpole eventually become us AND become every other vertebrate we know.

I didn't realize imitating stupid hippies was invented and used exclusively by your boyfriend Chi. For the record I don't hate him, I just find him obnoxious most of the time, in the same way I find you except your saving grace is making comics. Lol, stealing his "quotes and personality" when you try so hard to be like him or act like him all the time.

Hey guys let me give a really lay definiton of evolution without using the word evolution and then ask everyone to discuss what scientists have already been discussing, haha. Yeah dude, evolution does work in mysterious ways, LOL.

Re: Life is so surreal
Know how in early stages of evolution, all you had was colonies of cells? They formed colonies because it maximized their potential for survival, much like humans formed tribes.
Then, certain cells started performing certain jobs, and evolved to excel at that specialization. Say, processing other organic stuff for energy, or being tough to protect the colony from the outside.
At the later stages, we start calling these colonies individual organisms. But that is not exactly true - they are still colonies. Much like a city, or a country, or a society, are still merely colonies of humans, humans are simply colonies of cells.
...And it's all good, but then self-awareness comes in to make the whole thing trippy.
You see, if cells had self-awareness, they would have no idea that we are self-aware and think of ourselves as one organism and don't give a shit about individual cells. A good analogy would be the city being self-aware. While an individual blood cell is just doing it's work, and thinking how good it has it.

technically there is only a 3 nucleotide difference that separates the complexity of homo sapien brains from that of the other great apes
this mutation could happen relatively quickly in any of them

Fucking stoners. Who knows, maybe humans will drive it to extinction in the near future or something, or with the advancement of genetics we'll create shit like lettuce with ultra potent THC in it.

Re: Life is so surreal
I watched it as well, and I was in awe throughout the entire thing as well. Like, ugh... just the fact that we have more than 9 planets (as in - we only have 9 planets in our solar system, but there's actually more outside of them) is fucking mindblowing. Lol like - THERES FUCKING MORE PLANETS OUTSIDE OF THE ONES WE KNOW - the ones we were taught in school are just a small portion! I didn't understand the rest though hahahahaha but in my defense I was tired. Anyway yeah great show.
EDIT: Also this wasn't on the show but just a fun fact - Pluto is debated whether or not it's actually a planet, so some people think there's only 8 in our solar system.

Re: Life is so surreal
As of now scientists consider we only have 8 planets in our solar system. The rest are considered dwarf planets, like Pluto, Eris (and a bunch of other trans-neptunian objects) and Ceres (the largest planetoid in the asteroid belt).
Outside of our solar system there have been hundreds of planets that have been discovered, and a few of these are earthlike or found in what they call "goldilocks zone", which is the habitable orbit around a star; like where Earth is located.
People speculate there might be life outside of earth within our solar system, so life in other systems is very likely. Considering we've discovered all these planets in radius of around less than a 1,000 light years, and the entire galaxy is 100,000 light years, and there are billions of them in the universe...
I think life isn't exactly uncommon out there.

I saw a documentary a couple o' months ago, about precisely that subject.
Apparently there's loads more places where life could evolve, outside of the previously mentioned zone.
Granted, those lifeforms might not be carbon based, and the heat might not come from a star but from geological friction caused by periodically changes in distance to whatever these moons etc. orbit around, and a few other causes if memory serves, so it seems the "goldilocks zone" theory is somewhat outdated.
Hold on, I'll see if I can dig something up, it's really worth a watch.
EDIT: This isn't the program I watched, but they touch upon some of the same concepts and places...

Re: Life is so surreal
how is this any more ridiculous or improbable compared to anything else that we can measure or quantify in the 4 dimensional universe that we study. Its all incredibly impossible for any of it to exist - of course its all very beautiful perceived through our biological facilities and consciousness
