Spent lighter? No gas stove? NO TOASTER?
Protip: frazzle a Q-tip and ignite it with the flint of a spent lighter.
Sauce: just tried it

I have around five lighters at all times, assorted and various, BIC and cheap, but I have found myself without once or twice.

Re: Spent lighter? No gas stove? NO TOASTER?
So, here we talk about the most desperate way we ever tried to lit up something to smoke it?
This one time, like OP said I had no gas and my lighter was spent... so I had an old can of Axe somewhere and sprayed the little of what was left of it into a wall, tried to flint it before it evaporated and it lit for a few seconds; enough for me to light a cigarette.
Good times.

i salute you, turbo neger. I've found myself at the end of a binge with like 4 dead lighters and just pacing my street looking for discarded lighters and asking people in their lawns for a light. good times.

Enjoy this PSP Pro rendition of what I've seen
(Bradley)I'm not sure if sticking in one paperclip at a time would kill you, or if you need to touch both, but this was used a few times safely

Why does it have to be a gas stove? I've lit cigarettes off of electric stoves, my house is where lighters go to die.

When I was in county we'd have the power go out once or twice a week from people blowing sockets, you'd hear this loud ass pop then all the lights would go out, we also had someone smuggle crack in and after crafting a stem somehow which I don't remember how he ripped the wiring out of the speaker in his cell and used it as his screen

Re: Spent lighter? No gas stove? NO TOASTER?
Steel wool + battery...
Potassium permanganate + glycerin...
Dowel rod in electric drill + block of wood...
Magnifying glass + sun...
Empty lighter + full lighter missing the stone...
Belt sander or angle grinder + iron bar...
File + magnesium bar + gasoline...
Anything that'll spark + black powder or flammable liquid + cotton pad...
And the list goes on and on, I can't even remember how many different ways I've lit up a smoke, I do however remember a mate of mine once set a house ablaze with a circular saw w/ a worn out blade + a ventilation system clogged with wood dust, that was an interesting new trick, and I'm sure you could've lit a smoke on it...

I've taken the habit of removing the flints from all my old lighters and hiding them in the seems of my jeans.
started after i got out of jail and realized how useful those things can be. when your in the can you can trade fire for pretty much anything. drugs, money, food etc...

Re: Spent lighter? No gas stove? NO TOASTER?
One day, I decided to take my 8x11" hard plastic (they are more powerful than you imagine, melts pennies into a pile of metallic looking turds within seconds) fresnel lens in the woods. I was just walking around with it in my hand, and noticed a searing burning pinpoint feeling on my leg. I then realized immediately the reflection from a rock sent the beam directly to my leg.
Then I wondered if highly evolved pyramid technologies really did destroy Atlantis, in the same manner. It's not that difficult, if you think about it.
Humanity isn't in danger of wars, cataclysms, or economic disasters. It's that one guy who drops a cigarette at the gas station, that always messes it up for everyone.
Oh, and later on that day I seared a message into a hard plastic bench. Fucking thing stayed there for months, still not sure if it went away.

I think it was like 10 bucks on amazon.com. Make sure to get the HARD plastic ones, and maybe a few thin plastic ones to go with it. Hold it so that the notched side faces the sun, wear some dark sunglasses, and keep your dick the fuck away from that thing, whatever you do.
They melt pennies pretty quickly, even in winter weather, as long as the sun is out. There's this guy with a youtube channel greenpowerscience that does all sorts of shit with the bigger ones, I think he measured 3000F heat.

They seem like a pretty good option for a few projects ive got in mind, but i got a few questions:
1) Can it get a relatively small piece of steel (eg. knife sized) to a bright orange colour? I know you said they can melt pennies, but I know new pennies are mainly zinc, which melts around 450C, compared to about the 1000C im looking for.
2) whats the difference between hard and soft lenses? If its a mounting problem, can i just build a frame to hold it steady?
3) how much of a difference is there between a typical summer, spring and winter day?
4) what do you think of building a rig and using multiple mirrors and lenses to concentrate more energy?

As far as other metals I never waited long enough for them to turn bright/glowing orange but I noticed on nickels and quarters it left an orange "burn/stain". Otherwise, their melting point is higher than the metals in pennies.
I tried this "rig" idea with a friend way out in these high cliffs (he held one, I used another with a mirror) but the mistake I made was using a small mirror (car sunvisor size), either that or I just didn't aim it right or something. I would try it, and if you find anything interesting (the thin ones are cheap so I say go for it) you should post a vid on youtube.
I'd say from seeing parabolic mirror setups posted online, it should technically work if you set the rig correctly and had it angled just right. I'd use a big mirror, like at least the size of the lens itself. Dont sue me if the glass breaks into your eyes because I havent tried this lol, these things are no joke but if you do get something, you might be onto making a shitload of heat, so I'd be careful.
I could be wrong but I think the hard ones are supposed to create more heat, plus they're way more durable. The things are all paper thin anyways, they should last years if you dont scratch them.
As far as weather, I don't think it matters. It was the middle of summer, I melted a penny in seconds, and the same with snow literally next to it in winter.
If they ever make some super advanced sustainable thermoelectric generator technology, these things will come in handy. This guy is on the right track, he got about 14V. Imagine a more sustainable setup and a ton of these in series:
For the best result, there will be a bright blue rectangular "magnified sunbeam" with the notched side pointed at the sun (this is why you need sunglasses especially with metals it is BRIGHT). I kept using the flat end, and couldnt start a fire worth shit, then I accidentally flipped sides and BAM fucking instant black smoking log, so one side is optimal. There's a lot of shit on greenpowerscience's youtube. I think he made glass from rock, I always wondered what beach sand would be like, gotta try that one day. You could probably get some iron ore or whatever if you pretty much blaze things down to their basic makeup.
Man just thinking of this shit makes me wanna take a day off and go melt shit haha

Re: Spent lighter? No gas stove? NO TOASTER?
Well you know those really soft, tiny fuzzy fibers on your socks that rub off everywhere? Gently pluck some out with your fingers, then again, and again, they will stick together, and keep going till you have a light uncompressed ball the size of a pea or so. All it takes to light it on fire is the smallest spark from a dead lighter, but you gotta be quick, because it will only burn for like a second. If you hold it right to the end of your smoke and suck as you light it you should be able to light the smoke with it, ive done it more then once.
