I'm rereading wheel of time because it's my favorite book series. It has its flaws, (oh man, does it ever) but it rocks sooooo hard.

Almost finished The Decline of the West by Oswald Spengler. It is one of the most profound books I have read since I discovered Nietzsche, and anyone who wants to learn the future (or lack thereoff) in store for the planet should read it immediately.

Thumbs Up Re: Here is the "book you are currently reading" thread

Food of the Gods - Terence Mkcenna(because i'll never 'stop' referencing this masterpiece

The Philip K. Dick reader - compilation of philip k dick short stories. I bang one out when i have limited time to read. apparently everyone involved in modern sci-fi/horror films read this too because IMO he pretty much set the standard

Freakanomics - Just finished this after finding in the free bin at the library. I'm surprised it kept my attention because I loath economics in my recent years

Historiae Alexandri Magni - alexander the great bio in latin. Have to look up 80% of the words and it's pretty much kicking my ass. supposedly it's a beginners read and if/when i get to the end i'll hopefully have my head wrapped around latin a little better

after reading this thread i'm adding 'the decline of the west' and 'infinite jest' to my list

A pocket sized book of "Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe" except all the good stories are missing. No Cask of Amontillado, no Never bet the Devil your head, no Pit and the Pendulum, no Tell Tale Heart, no Black Cat, no Mask of Red Death, and no Purloined Letter.

I'm somewhat upset.

Infinite Jest-Pain in the ass, doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, but I maybe too dumb to really "get it". The only book I quit and feel fucking bested, but I always end up coming back to it, just to see what the hypes all about.

A collection of poems by Charles Bukowski- Very entertaining read, that delves into the actual thought process of how men really think. Without the censorship or the fear of being ostracized.

And a novel by Kurt Vonnegut- Don't remember because it's on my kindle and the batteries dead. Haven't been reading too much lately just kind of got bored with it, but I should start back up again. Anybody else go through a non-reading spell?

Infinite Jest can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but stick with it. It has plenty of entertaining moments and great sentences. It becomes hard to put down, trust me.

I have read most of it, but I misplaced and lost it with the last 1/6th to go. I quite liked it, although it got monotonous in places.

His spiel about execution stood out in my mind. I think about it fairly frequently.

Heliogabalus - Antonin Artaud

Whoever translated it did a shitty job, unless Artaud was really writing like that, which wouldn't shock me.

I'm almost done reading Naked Lunch by Borroughs (yeah, I had never read any of his work before, to my dismay).

Which other book from him do you people recommend?

Naked Lunch is the shit. THE SHIT.

I would also recommend his more conventional type works; Junky and Queer. Cities of the Red Night and that whole trilogy is good too; more conventional but still surrealist as fuck. If you want his deep end incoherent ramblings then the Nova Express trilogy. Wild Boys is the most similar to Naked Lunch in my opinion. It's all good though. If I had to specifically recommend any of them, I would say Junky, then Wild Boys.

If you like Burroughs then you should also check out Cains Book by Trocchi. It is very, very different, but the subject matter is similar. I find that they compliment each other; Trocchi being more existential and nihilistic, Burroughs being surrealist and hallucinogenic.

It's confusing and has a non-linear plot, but it's basically about this guy named William Lee traveling about and meeting all sorts of characters. There's everything from dystopias to drugs to orgies to violence. It's kind of surreal and raw.

I find that it is the kind of book where you can open a random chapter and get a complete narrative from it. The first time I read it, I found it to just be a series of extreme imagery, but people fawn over it for a reason. Once you get past the rawness of it, it can give back allot. I think it is essentially about addiction, which makes sense since Burroughs wrote it when out of his mind on opiates.

Yeah, you can pretty much read any chapter in any order to make out the whole story. I'm assuming William Lee is pretty much what Henry Chinaski is to Charles Bukowski.

He uses William Lee in Junky too. I think his mothers name was Lee. But yeah, William Lee is Burroughs. Same with Dr Benway up to a point.

I don't even know what section. Fiction I guess... If they had a sense of humor I could see it in romance.

It's in the Classics section of many stores, just East of Dickens.

I'm just finishing up Steve Martin's autobiography. I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends.
