Enough to warrant the expense
But, not really.
I just think it would be cool to play Tank Hunter with actual tanks.

Re: Tank build update thread
I also suggest secondary cameras. The primary camera is going to be highly visible, and therefore a likely target for attack. It may be bulletproof, but unlike the cops responding to the armoured bulldozer in Colorado, criminals might be smart enough to cover the lens with mud or tape.
Add a couple pinhole cameras, but make the lenses discreet. No one will suspect a camera hidden in the treads. Cheap wireless spy cameras are all over ebay, but the transmitters are usually lousy.

Re: Tank build update thread
http://superstoker.com/ski-video/360-video/
there's that crazy 360 shit, click to move around...
Security cameras often utilize wide angle or fisheye lenses to get maximum field of view, although this comes with a cost of spherical distortion and shortened range. Search for wireless security cameras and you will find something useful- for your purposes I would use something between 130-170* field of view. Security cameras generally come as sets, so if you have to buy 4 cameras it would be pretty easy to rig them front+back+right+left for simulated 360 video- although it would output on four separate screens, not as one image stitched together.
here's a basic search to start from-

Re: Tank build update thread
Update: Sent the turret plates off to be welded today. 1/2" thick mantlet and rear turret plate are being cut to shape.
Currently ran into some trouble finding an affordable but quality place to cast the roadwheels and tracks.
Also looking for a quality industrial bearing for the turret ring.
Will report as soon as there are further developments.

Why not just make the road wheels on a lathe?

Will it still be able to shoot regular shells? Cause if it does you should get some of these bad boys.
ddupleks
Hell you could even put a thermal IR camera on that thing and and improve its target tracking down to a T. Also, is the tank gonna reload the main gun automatically or is it going to be a one shot, then open her up and reload type of deal?

Re: Tank build update thread
So I have very bad news. A HUGE setback. Just got a quote from the cheapest quality place around: US$6,000 to cast all 28 roadwheels and idlers, 120 tracks and pins, and 4 sprockets in iron. If I want cast steel the price doubles.
So, that's a bit way above my budget, so that phase is going on hold.
I think it'll be cheaper to purchase commercial trolley wheels, commercial sprockets, and bycicle chain riveted onto rubber treads for the time being. .

Counter insurgency?
I thought you were an insurgent....
You have easy access to Communist and Nazi weaponry, and harder access to American and allied weaponry, and in South America you need to know insurgents, gangsters and terrorists to get that kind of shit.......
Are you planning on killing yourself?

Also, of course cast steel is going to be expensive as fuck. I'm not very knowledgeable about metal working, but wouldn't milled components (CNC) be easier (no need to make a cast then)? Or am I underestimating the cost of programming a CNC machine?

I might look into that actually.
But meanwhile, commercial trolley wheels and rubber track riveted onto roller chain will have to suffice.
Probably lighter and gives more traction too.

Not even I know exactly! . It's just a good friend of mine that I know works for the good guys, but not specifically who. That's his problem I guess. I'm not know for asking questions. It's not my place. I am merely Vulcan.

Yup, one of my favourite movies, I know it by heart.
And I have my reasons for knowing that he's not pretending. He has helped me before, and I have been very useful to him as well.
Plus we've known each other all our lives. Literally.

suggestions : conveyor belts from quarries and cement factories might have wheels and gears in the size your looking for.
And I think I seen some farm equipment with tracks in the size your looking for ....

Just reminded me that princes auto has a section devoted to different gears and the likes... I'll have to take a poke at it later on and see what they've got in stock.

If you're looking into someone to mock up CAD drawings. I have the necessary skills, give me some technical drawings and I should be able to knock them up in no time. Depending on the difficulty obviously.

I think the main issue they had was he was using it on sidewalks, etc. which apparently can't withstand his treads.
