Snoop Dogg is now Snoop Lion and going Reggae rather than Rap

SNOOP Dogg has officially dropped the Dogg act and upgraded his name to "Snoop Lion".
The rapper says he underwent a spiritual and artistic rebirth while in Jamaica where he was given the new moniker by Rastafarian priests.

Legally he isn't any sort of animal, of course, but must go by the name Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.

"I want to bury Snoop Dogg, and become Snoop Lion" Mr Broadus Jr told journalists at a news conference in New York.

"I didn't know that until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, 'Snoop Dogg.' And he looked me in my eyes and said, 'No more. You are the light; you are the lion.' From that moment on, it's like I had started to understand why I was there."

The 40-year-old said as a result of his reincarnation, his new album will be a reggae record as he finds rap no longer "a challenge."

“There comes a point where you say I done it all, or there isn’t much more to do,” he said. “This was like a rebirth for me.

"With no disrespect to other rappers, but they can't f--- with me in rap ... I've won every accolade you can get in rap, they call me 'Uncle Snoop' in rap. When you're an uncle, it's time to find something new ... I want to feel like a kid again."

“I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated. I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn’t have my third eye open, but its wide open right now.”

Broadus Jr is currently working on his fifth album, Reincarnated, which is strictly a reggae project.

I don't feel this "news" is worthy of as much criticism as it's received. But since everyone else has thrown in their opinion, I'll throw in mine. Let's face it, Snoop is getting up there.. He isn't a young thug no more.. And I'm sure everyone here can agree (unless your a teenager and still in high school) that over a long enough period of time, we all change.. and so does our perspectives on the world. It isn't about making that money and being in the spotlight.. well, maybe it is a little bit. But more/less, it's about leaving a legacy.. Snoop has been successful enough that he is probably set for life and has ensured that his family/kids have enough take care of themselves after he is long gone.. But it's his music.. He's making this new album and transition because instead of wanting to be remembered for gangbangin and being a Crip.. He wants to leave a legacy of love, and more importantly, by honoring the plant and lifestyle that he has honored his entire life.. with or without proper affiliation.. (talking about marijuana and Rastafarianism). Simple as that.. He's had a long prosperous career.. Money isn't an issue.. He wants to do right by his kids, family, and music/lifestyle he enjoys besides rap/thuggin'.. Honestly, I hope it's some good shit. I enjoy listening to Marley from time to time..

Snoop has been a sell out for a while so to me it's no suprise he has decided to try something new. What has suprised me is that it has got some support from the reggae community. I'm a big fan of Easy Star All Stars, I've even partied with them but they reckon the new Snoop stuff is great. Odd, I know.

What would be interesting to hear is the reaction from some of the Marley children, maybe even hear a collaboration with Damien Marley and Snoop.
