This is actually a really interesting point. Think, before, erotica reading wasn't exactly something that was encouraged. But, now - not only is it encouraged, but everyone is doing it making it a lot more widely accepted.

You can read it under the guise of "Oh, well everyone else is reading it!" and like you said, it becomes their very first experience with erotica, despite being an all around terrible book.
