Default Homemade magnetic detachers

Is it possible? I've been looking at detachers but they're too expensive and I was thinking why wouldn't a countersunk neodymium magnet be able to open up magnetic hard tags? Let me show you what I mean, magnets like these:

They have the same shape as the commercial detachers and can be just as strong, and will be lighter and more portable.
I've tried it before but with a rectangular magnet and it didn't work so I think the dimensions and thickness have to be a certain size.
Has anyone had any luck with this sort of stuff?

Oh and before anyone says post in the shoplifting tips and techniques thread, this isn't a tip or technique, I'm asking a question.

You need a magnetic detacher to take them off though

It depends on what type of tag you're talking about. Tags do differ.

Just to clarify I'm talking about a magnetic detacher for taking these types of tags off.

you guys, s3 keys do not take off most clothing tags, im serious.

s3 keys do work on most alpha products, but its not a magical device.
mosting clothing tags that require a magnetic detacher, have giant detachers located at the registers, those things can be strong.

http://www.retailsecuritytags.com/products/?group=DT

look at these different detachers, an s3 key will not do the job most of the time.

trust me, i've used an s3 key, and i've seen detachers.

I bought what I thought was one of these magnetic clothing tag detachers. What I got in the mail was a 2"x1" rectangular magnet. When I emailed them and said it didn't look like the picture, they told me it was the magnet that came inside the detacher. I've tried to use it but haven't gotten it to work yet and I'm wondering if the casing makes a difference. Anyone know the magnetic physics of how these things work?

most hard tags on clothing that people are referring to are not in any way related to alpha s3 products that are removed with the key.

You need a seriously strong magnet and a little practice. I have tried a few different neodymium magnets that people said would work and they were not strong enough for certain types of hardtags.

would like to add that buying a random strong magnet will not work!

you need a specific magnetic field to open locks inside the tags.

of course the force matters - you need it strong enough - but you also need the right field or direction it pulls in.. . or your money spent on those magnets will just go down the drain....
