Today marks a new era of internet for me
I have finally upgraded. I've had dialup all my life, and now, finally, it's time for change.
People of Zoklet. After a whole hour of screwing with network and router settings, I have upgraded....to WIRELESS DIALUP!
It's even slower than before!
At least I've found something to do with this router I've had laying around.
Before anyone suggests it, clearwire doesn't reach where I am, there is no cable, can't get DSL for some reason, and fuck satilite (I can have DSL speeds for over $50/month AND a download cap of under a GB? Fuck that).
I had the idea of converting an old C-band satilite dish into a superduper wifi antenna, but I'm still surrounded by forrest and trees, so I doubt I'd get anything.
Any ideas on how to get me fast internet other than smartphone/cellphone contract bullshit?

WIRELESS DIALUP!
Damn dude it's 2012, I thought it was bad when I finally convinced my parents to get high speed cable in 2008 lol.
Do you have 4G or 3G in your area? You might just have to get one of those wireless contracts for high speed...

Re: Today marks a new era of internet for me
My dad whooped my ass one day because he specifically told me not to use the internet because he was expecting a phone call from his boss. But I wanted to play games on disney.com.
That ass whooping was well worth it.

I wouldnt even consider 3G "high speed".
How can your new internet be slower than a 56k modem? Is that even possible?

I don't see the issue?
Get a 500mile ethernet cord
Plug into computer
Plug into the nearest internet ethernet station
And there you go!

Re: Today marks a new era of internet for me
Just don't sing any contracts man.. That two year bullshit will get you every time. Not only that, but to buyout of the contract is like equal to paying for 5 months or something.. And 3 gigs of data or less dont go far.. I gotta be moving on up myself.. I have done my research but there has to be some way to pirate 3-4g without a service provider, right? And I'm not talking about a wifi hotspot..

There's nothing wrong with a two-year contract if it's appropriate for your given situation. I'm on a 2-year contract that's 32 pounds a month and has 2000 minutes, and unlimited text and data. It came with a free iPhone too. Good luck getting a deal like that with prepaid/pay-as-you-go,

Re: Today marks a new era of internet for me
There was a time when people would shotgun modems to get an internet speed of 112k. It involved using two phone lines and two modems connecting to separate Internet providers running into one computer.
Smoking speed on Windows 98.

If you can get a 3G connection you could buy one of those mi-fi things, 15GB/month for £18, iirc, which is fine unless you download a lot of stuff.

Reminds me of the dumb african kids who walk 20 miles to a pond for drinking water. Why not just move closer to the water?

This thread is pure gold. I never would imagine running into someone that still uses dial up.
I too remember getting my ass kicked for using the internet while my dad was using the phone.

If you wanted to go on youtube, how long would it take you to buffer a 2 minute video?

I have a fair few friends that either used to survive, or still survive, off of free trial AOL disks for their internet.

EDIT: Noticed you live in Washington...Shoulda looked before I responded.
I would have a hard time believing that you can't get a good internet plan with Verizon in Washington...My dad lives in a little asshole town in Idaho and even he gets high speed internet.

This is a really shitty idea. 15GB/month is 120000Mb/month which, assuming 30 days in a month, comes out to less than 48Kb/s. OP is better off with dialup.

15GB/month is the total amount of bandwidth you can use in a month, not your connection speed.

Re: Today marks a new era of internet for me
It's possible to pair two identical 33.6 kbit/s analog modems in dual use in a single computer and create two separate 33.6kbit/s connections on the same machine. This method is called inverse multiplexing. It requires two phone lines and two identical analog modems. We used to call this kind of connection a "shotgun" connection 20 years ago. It is also possible to create up to FOUR separate 33.6/56k connections on the same machine with an old device similar to a router which is called WebRamps (pretty cheap to buy now) if your ISP supports more than two channels, but you can create at least two full 33.6/56k analog channels even without it.

Re: Today marks a new era of internet for me
With the shotgun system set up, you don't actually get any more speed than you'd get from a standard 56k modem, but what it does do (for example) is allow you to max out one of the 56k connections on the one modem in downloading a file, while simultaneously able to max out a second download on the other 56k as well, basically giving you the download potential of a 112k connection.
