Default About to make a big move

OK! So I just graduated from college with a fairly general degree in a field that isn't exactly applicable to someone looking for a job in the field. Granted I didn't exactly apply myself 100% in my degree field, I got a lot out of college in the long run. But anyway--

I have been offered a position at a certain non-profit youth development organization. I accepted this position with the thinking that either a.) I will have a full time position within 6 months and or b.) it will greatly increase my chances of making it into the Peace Corps., which is my ULTIMATE GOAL.

Starting out I will be making 8.50/hr, during the summer I will be working about 30 hours a week. If everything goes well hopefully I will get more pay and more hours, and with that potentially health benefits etc. I'm going to be living in a ghetto ass town with zero prospects for the people who grew up there, who harbor intense bitterness for the neighboring college community which I was a part of during my schooling.

I found a house in the minimally ghetto part of town and rent, utilities, cable internet and television is all included for $350 a month, I will be sharing the place with a girl who is the landlady's daughter, and I believe another female occupant.

I plan on getting another job sooner rather than later to supplement my income and hopefully put some away for when I have to begin paying school loans and or possibly covering my own health insurance when I am no longer covered under my parents plan next year.

Usually I work in a soul draining, exhausting kitchen ~55 hours a week. It served its purpose while I was in school, but I couldn't see continuing with that beyond the summer. It leaves zero room to develop the self and on my days off I have hardly the time or energy to search for a career in this rural area that I call home.

this is a long diatribe and I doubt many of you have made it this far but if you have, what do you think of this plan?? am I retarded for giving up the job I have now, and leaving my parent's house? tune in next week for

What the fuck kind of degree did you get that gets you a job paying $8.50/hr?

Hope you actually learned something because that sounds like a massive waste of time.

well the thing is what I got my degree in and what i'm doing now aren't exactly related. I was a visual arts major and got a minor in english.

I learned some shit bro. I call it well rounded. Money is a big concern for me, in the sense that I need it to survive. But other than that I live simply and as long as I have my six string and a novel by my bed side I am a happy man.

OP I make 14.00 an hour with overtime and gainshare that averages my salary out to 16-17 an hour. I am still in college too. Additionally I can get up to 20 hours overtime in any week if I want to put it in. So I would say get a better job.

Yeah dude, on the real, you want to be making 10+ an hour at least. As a fucking pizza delivery nigger I was averaging 20-25 dollars an hour, ~25 hours a week (hours were never guaranteed, only downside).

It's the story of any college student's life... There's never a payoff, never a reward. Just constant servitude, senseless work, restraint and rationing until you're a withered old wreck of a human being. Then you can have your shitty condo. And I'll be waiting for you there. With a lead pipe. Haha, it's hell on Earth! And I'm the Devil, baby!!!

ah Jim, you're full of gems.

Anyway, I'm (financially, kitchen exp, and recent graduate) in a similar situation to you. I'm living at home to save up during my only summer of minimum wage work. It's crazy to think that back two summers ago (before those unpaid internships ) I was making 13-15 an hour on weekends just to clean dishes. I live with myself by thinking that I love the work. So far I do, but I'm new to it and I'm sure the luster will wear off. But it'll also help for landing the next, full-time job.

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan if you sincerely want to join the peace corps. I have a good friend who's doing a similar program but moving away from home. I know he's working more with youth (real young youth, and not in that buttsecks way you're thinking about ), but I only imagine that's easier because he's less likely to get shot/attacked by a zombie. Depending what they exactly have you doing, just keep your wits about you, respect the fact that it's THEIR community, and as much as you're trying to do to make it improve, they very well might like certain things a certain way. Suck it and see.

You at least type like you have a good head on your shoulders and a direction in life. You'll probably be fine if you keep doin' what you're doin'
