Krinker Plinker (Almost)
So I finally decided to take the plunge away from the classical, and to bring my old war-beaten East German underfolder into the 21st. Century.
This is her Before:
This is her Now:
NCStar Operating cover with Picattiny rail, Tapco Aluminium Quad Picattiny vented handguards, nice, solid forward grip that's also a bipod (forgot the brand, but it's not one of the cheap ones), NCStar holographi sight with 4 optional reticles in both red and green, US-made black pistol grip to match the furniture, Bulgarian Waffle mags in both 30 and 40 rounds, and last but not least, a real-deal Russian Krinker Plinker muzzle break.
Oh, and an old universal arms 4x32 scope with Weaver rings, but I'll replace it with another Tasco 3-9x40 IR on UTG QD rings in the near future.

I can do 2"-3" at 100 metres if I really do my best, supported, on semi. Not as good as the FAL, but decent enough for an assault rifle. On full-auto, she patterns, but I you can still put about half of the rounds into a man-sized target at 50 yards if needed. There's no real recoil or muzzle climb tho, even with the original muzzle break. This one only corrects the sideways sway that develops under FA.
I'll say this. AK's are definitely not AR-15's, but in the hands of a decent operator they're very good. I wouldn't wrinkle my nose at using one.
I'm beginning to think, after all these years and testing all these guns, that, except in the case of extremely bad weapons, it pretty much doesn't matter what weapon/caliber you use, but how well you use it. Of course every job has an optimal tool, but I think most weapons will get you out of a pinch.

Why, why, whyyyyy.... Couldn't you have souped up a WASR or something expendable. Not an Mpikms. I've been looking for one for a longgggg time now. I need one for my Warsaw Pact reenacting group.

There's a saying where I'm from. "Always be careful of the man with only one gun."
Chances are he's had it his whole life and could shoot the pecker off a jackrabbit at full run.

I could never destroy a piece of history. Especially considering there is no DDR anymore.

What are you talking about?
The rifle looks Russian to me, did the EGs even make a milled receiver rifle?

It is not milled it is clearly stamped. And an Mpikm could never be mistaken for s Soviet AKM by a trained eye. No ribs on the dust cover, pebbled dark Bakelite handle. They even used a different type of finish on all the metal, looks more dark and glossy than a Soviet.

I guess I just never heard of a milled EG AK. The rifle is milled, I l ow that for certain. Look at the receiver cuts above the mag well, I have never seen a stamped receiver that looked like that.

Not at my best, but doing better. Diet and meds have helped. I spent a month in the US and Europe. That kinda helped too.
Thanks for asking mate .

My rifle is milled.
I also have a Russian AKM (solid stock), and yes, the differences are notorious.
If there was more ammo for 7.62x39mm I'd consider getting more AK varieties.

Re: Krinker Plinker (Almost)
I wonder how comfortable they'd be if I went to visit with a few crates of ammunition.
"Anything to declare sir?"
"Yes actually I was wondering if you'd be able to suggest a good place to pick up a nice cup of coffee?"
I'd probably get shot going through customs.

Nah, they're very professional. They'd put you in jail tho.
I've studied all potential ways of getting some ammo (500 rounds would be enough for me) into the country, but to no avail.

I don't understand ammo shortages in a country run by organised crime with a history of terrorism and insurgency, with borders to countries very similar.

Reloading an option?
A German friend of mine found out you can use water pressure to pop out the Berdan primed steel casings of mil surplus. Just a little food for thought.
If I recall correctly he put it into the press and when he went to size the neck of the casing he'd fill it with water and supposedly it'd pop the primer out.
Haven't tried this myself yet though so I can't verify it but it's an idea all the same.

Obtaining powder, tips and primes would be a problem as well. Not to mention I have never saved the casings.

I'd love to know what year yours is, I thought the GDR only made stamped receivers by the time they got their AKM contract. You either have a very early one, or I was ill informed to the commonness of milled mpikm rifles.

I gotta say that I prefer the before picture, looks better maybe that's because I don't think gold or silver should never be a colour on a firearm.

Damn, upon examining you're photos further, I don't think you have an Mpikm at all, rather just an MpiK, that is a very highly collectable rifle! The slant muzzle brake mislead me to believe it was the AKM model, and thus to not inspect the photos further (apologies to 5.56).

It's cool, man.
Guess the milled receiver threw us both off.
