I'd say the only failure is the parents.

Bringing up your kids is not the responsibility of the state, or of the school. The fact that their kid goes to a shitty school and doesn't get any education out of school either is entirely their fault. Even if they have no choice but to have the kid go to a bad school, in the day and age where the internet is accessible at their fingertips at blazing speeds, there is no excuse for ignorance.

Don't want to sound like an old fuck, as I'm still in my early 20s, but back when I was a kid, if I wanted to go learn something / access some new information, I had to either walk a mile to the local library and search for relevant books, then carry several kilos of them back home, or take a bus into town and buy a CD with information on it. To have SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES and not to take advantage of them? That is just sad.

But when they grow up and the only jobs available to them are minimum wage, and even those are stolen by illegal immigrants that don't even speak the language (!), don't go looking for benefits, because you have only yourselves to blame.

As someone who is an even older fuck, and whose mother had to work, leaving the education to babysitters, I find that most of my education came from a school system that didn't actually suck ass.

We went on field trips. To the fucking zoo, be it a real zoo or some petting zoo, we went to banks and saw not just the tellers but the work people did in the back, we went to a fucking nuclear power plant and saw how that worked (and learned about brand-new touch screen technology, how fucking old is that), to a gaslight district to learn about the history of our state.

Because learning isn't just with a damned book and a teacher yapping at you in a classroom. It's not about your fucking self-esteem or whether your grades are quite as good as everyone else's. It's not about giving kids a chance to be kids or letting them glue their faces to a computer or cell phone screen where they will learn absolutely fuck-nothing about life or other people. Teachers acted like fucking professionals, they did not turn into teary-eyed bitches running to the unions when Johnny fuckhead acted up in class. Parents took that little shithead over their knee and (most of them) didn't go running to the school board in a bitchfit unless they were the kind of privileged pricks that thought life owed their kid a soft ride.

There's too much of that shit these days too, people trying to cushion their kiddies, and not doing the poor little bastards any favors.

Because they won't. Someone herp derping in text speak at them eliminates them from the life experience.

I love the technology era, but people need to get back to the fucking basics of education. Kids start off as stupid and assholish little fucks, because nature doesn't civilize, educate, or in any way moralize people straight out of the womb. The point of school is to turn them into human beings, rather than leaving them as brainless little shitmonsters waiting for their next technofix and fad-of-the-moment entertainment.

I pity the people two or three generations down the line who are going to have a terrifying wake-up call when they find out they been coddled so heavily that a tyranny isn't even needed... a pack of savage mother-fuckers from some previously substandard nation who had to learn how to do things from the ground up will invade and crush them because they can't even defend themselves.

Tapir are like, ugly giant guinea pigs. I know this. I've scene them at a couple zoos. I totally wouldn't have remembered them if I didn't make the association with the guinea pig I had back when I was of zoo-frequenting age. I'm too lazy to write a paragraph on them, but I know what they are and their general habitat. I think I've even fed one. Oh wait, I guess this is about a paragraph in length. Fuck you, benny vader.

Of course I'm not in grade 4. If I had been in grade 4... I probably still would have remembered because that'd be right around the zoo-frequenting age I mentioned. Your point is also moot because every animal I listed is kind of iconic in some way. It'd be more accurate if you'd used sloth which is from... the same continent I guess, and another animal which most kids should know about.

EDIT: Just googled them, they're way less guinea pig like than I remember. I remember thinking tapirs looked a lot like capybara though. Which are exactly like giant guinea pigs. Meh.
