Honda Civic/Toyota Corolla. Yeah, they're not very nice cars to drive, but you'll get 8 grand change and they're fucking reliable.

40mpg - doubly good since diesel is cheaper than petrol in the US. Don't worry about it having more than 100k miles, they'll do 500k easily. I'm a bit biased, though.

Since I couldn't swing my folks on a Merc turbo diesel (le sigh) I ended up with a 2010 Corolla, in red.

I can't really complain though, I did 90mph for about 3 hours straight driving it back and it felt pretty solid. I like it. Can't figure out why it has traction control though.

How I wish they would have listened and bought one of these. At least the big Mercs have character. My folks are both in the oil industry and they were like "nah, diesel is only going to go up right now."

1953 Volkswagen Dolphin, make sure to get it in diesel if possible, and remember that you really have to moisturize it.

"much" is a bit much.

You use a bit less diesel in a passenger car application than you would gasoline, certainly not "much less."

Wut? I mean, I'm sure you're just having a laugh, but there's no such car. Perhaps you mean one of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Dauphine

Rear mounted 4 cylinder, around 30 HP, got between 30-40 MPG. Also had difficult swing arm rear suspension and would rust like a Lancia Beta. OP should sell his Corolla and look for one

I suppose it's easy to mistake it for a VW if one has little knowledge of old european cars. "Dauphine" doesn't mean "Dolphin" either, btw.

^^^ Probably more so than here in Canada, though apparently they did sell a few in the states. As I say they supposedly succombed to rust fairly easily, I imagine it wouldn't be easy to find one worth buying no matter what country you live in.

I just thought it would be fun to bring the car up, more for trivia's sake than anything else. It is an interesting and characterful little car I admit, it could be pretty fun and pretty quick if you modified it appropriately. There are better cars from that era though.
