That kinda looks like it could have been taken on Earth.

Without combining different braking systems, it wouldn't be possible (without breaking out the bubble wrap again). The parachute isn't enough on its own, using thrust on its own would consume insane amounts of fuel, etc.

The only part for me is lowering it on the cables from a hovering craft and then boosting away so it doesn't land on top of the rover. It obviously works, but that doesn't seem optimal.

A planet is a planet. And as far as types go, Mars is basically a stepbrother to Earth.

yea a cm of lead surrounding a spaceship big enough for a half dozen astronauts is gonna require way more fuel than we use now, unless of course we cut weight somewhere else.

Whats wrong with gamma rays? A couple of gamma rays never hurt anyone, just ask Bruce Banner. It seemed to work out pretty well for him...

Not to mention, cutting the intensity in half won't do much with a high intensity to start with. You'll need several centimeters to be safe, I'd wager.

Preferably with lead from a mined asteroid.

I just read this article...I got a chuckle out of it:

Quote:
NASA Calls It A Mission As Curiosity Rover Fills Up Whole 2-Gigabyte Memory Card

PASADENA, CA—Barely 72 hours after the landing of its Mars rover, NASA officials announced Thursday that their mission had ended, as Curiosity's two-gigabyte memory card was now filled to capacity. "Well, that's that, folks," said chief scientist John Grotzinger, explaining that after Curiosity's Mars Descent Imager took an especially high-resolution JPEG of the Aeolis Mons mountain, the $2.5-billion rover’s SanDisk card only had 0.03 GB of space remaining. "Honestly, we thought two gigs would be more than enough. That's like a 1,000 pictures, right? I guess we probably should have deleted those old Hubble photos off there before the mission." Grotzinger confirmed that even if the rover had been equipped with a larger memory card, it likely would have had only enough power for a few more hours of exploration before it had to return to Earth to have its battery recharged.

I lol'd, someone sent an email round at work saying 'NASA brought their robot back, they forgot the camera'.

I have a friend who believes that the onion is a genuine news site.

I think outer space would be awesome. I have been thinking about saving up for a Zero-G airplane ride. Thats probably the closest I'll get to outer space.

Same here. I'm glad it worked for them; I hope they figure something else out before the next round.
