Default Exhaust fell off behind cat 2001 corolla

Hey my roomates exhaust fell down because the metal strap that holds it up around the muffler on rusted through and snapped. The good sumeritan who lives in the house she stopped in front of grabbed a random other strap and rigged it up to get her home but right before the driveway it fell off from where the exhaust piPe meets the cat.

This is assuming I'm correct in the order of the exhaust being manifold>piping>cat>piping>muffler>exhaust tip

So I chopped off the temp band that was up on to get the muffler and piping from the cat back off and pryed off that rubber thing that the rusted band was around to get that off.

Now my question is how do I reattach the piping to the cat? Is there some kind of clamp or is it supposed to slip right in and is held in place once I get a new strap holding the muffler end up?

Also some pebbles and dirt got into the pipe and I got most of them out but a couple slid down into the muffler how much of a problem is this?

Oh and it's a 2001 corolla with the 2.2 liter four banger and five speed manual

It should be a solid piece. If not, there should be a flange on either side where bolts would go to hold the pieces together. From what it sounds like, the exhaust has just rusted through and taken the hanger with it. Most exhaust shops would weld it up no problem if you do not want to buy a new one.

Yeah ok there's no flanges to bolt it up with I can see what you're talking about closer to the muffler it has that but both sides of the cat don't too bad I was hoping for a DIY fix

Is it ok to drive the car a short distance with the exhaust off cat back?

I'd assume a short trip is ok but I don't wann to get carbon monoxide poisoning

If you're still looking for a super cheap fix, some soda cans with some hose clamps will hold it until you can get enough money to fix it.

yeah my dad mentioned he did that back in the day and they found a certain brand of beer that actually used steel cans or something instead of aluminum so it would last a bit longer

speaking of exhaust i just pulled an exhaust with a three in down pipe off a parts car for my saab turbo fucking badass it spools up way faster i cant wait to get a full three inch and convert it to a td04 later this summer

im gonna make a thread about that car soon once ive done a couple more things and cleaned it up its pretty fast for how cheap you can pick up saabs for i already had a stage 1 tune on mostly stock hardware but now with the DP and upgraded intercooler well be able to milk even more out with T5 suite.
