Amnesia is a pretty good exploration game. If you don't mind old shitty graphics the older Resident Evil games are good also. If you do then the remake of RE1 on the Gamecube still looks pretty nice.

RE1 had pre-rendered scenery which looked really nice at the time.

I have a friend who bums over Resident Evil, was never really into it, probably because I played silent hill when I was 7. Holy fucking shit I had nightmares for weeks. I'll have a look, maybe check out SH 2 and 3 as well.

Thanks to everyone else too, I'm downloading/buying pretty much every game in the thread I don't already have/own.

SH2 and 3 are a must!

Some of my most favourite games.

I wish a lot more PS1 games had used pre-rendered backgrounds as they are still playable today, even if emulating and playing on an LCD screen ruins the visuals a little they are far nicer than realtime rendered PS1 games. I also think that the screen transitions work well to increase suspense, although RE did overdo it a little with those fucking doors.

Other nice exploration games would be the whole Metroid series and Castlevania - SOTN. I remember when exploration was a part of pretty much every game, shame the linear nature of most FPS games today seems to shun exploration in favour of walking forwards with the fire button held down. I love exploration in games and if I think of any more I'll edit this.

I always thought the Baldur's Gate series had a lot of stuff to explore. Perhaps not so much in total land area, but each character had a specific bunch of different quests and areas.

The again, I was never that into computer games, so it mightn't be a good example.

Operation Flashpoint was good for exploring, back in the day.

Aw shit, and what was that free sci-fi mmorpg? The one where you start off on a little training level on a beach with some tunnels through the cliffs? One of the enemies was called a rollerrat.

Anyway. That was cool. Once you got onto the main map, it was absolutely enormous. I bought a speeder type thing and drove out to the middle of nowhere and saw these absolutely enormous tall creatures feeding on grasses in the plains. Also I went right into the desert and found a massive pit full of these nasty looking things. I also walked through a huge forest and found these ewok-like creatures just chillin'. And once there was a huge spaceship floating overhead - it took up the whole sky.

I only had that game for about two weeks, and I didn't get powerful enough to take on many of the quests. It also meant that while I was exploring I would quite often accidentally encounter some native creature that was incredibly powerful and aggressive and it would just kill me in one hit.

edit - found it - Anarchy Online.

Tail Of The Sun

Not sure how I acquired it, but that was one of the first games I ever played on PS1. A lot of exploration and a very unusual game in general. Although as a kid, I never did figure out what I needed to do.

Anyone heard of Infinity: Quest for Earth?
Meant to be like space engine, in that it's all procedurally generated (even cities). You can travel intergalactic and land/explore planets all in real time. Twitch based combat rather than point/click turn based. I think I also read somewhere that you can import models from 3DS Max to use as your own spaceship.
