California caretaker Arthur Carnes made several bad decisions in his life: principally the one to kill his former boss five years ago in a Sacramento suburb; then to dismember the victim; and finally, last month, to represent himself at a jury trial that ended on Monday with his conviction for first-degree murder.
It’s a case the prosecutor, Sacramento deputy district attorney Kevin Greene, described as a showcase for “pure evil.”
Among Carnes’ other bad choices was posting on his website (and leaving it there after the murder of Matthew Alan Seybert, 41, the man whose property Carnes maintained in the city of Galt) a 400-page manifesto in praise of “natural born killers” such as himself, and detailing the countless ways one could carry out a slaying — including the shooting and stabbing options he employed before decapitating and de-limbing Mr. Seybert in November 2007.
And when Carnes fled California in the days following Mr. Seybert’s death, he stole the victim’s car, was pictured on a closed-circuit camera emptying his ex-boss’s bank account and, bizarrely, kept with him both the murder weapon and a digital camera that held images of the body he’d chopped to pieces and the crime scene.
But Carnes, now 40, does seem to have made one smart decision at the time: to evade U.S. authorities by heading north and eventually making his way across the Canada-U.S. border into British Columbia.
