Lightbulb What I didn't like about Deus Ex 3

...Is that you use the same skills to hack computers, security terminals and unlock all doors.

Not even mentioning that it's a prequel to the original DX set in the future, where you had a more realistic environment with normal, physical key locks still widely used, but somehow a decade before that all those locks were eliminated in favour of digital locks.

Even ignoring that, the problem with this approach is that once you've acquired hacking skills, you have no incentive to look around for any door combinations or passwords, because you can just hack everything. And it gives you more rewards and skill points if you do.

In the original they had a more sensible approach, where you needed scarce lockpicks and multitools to open doors, but could use hacking skills to hack computers. That meant that:

a). If you got hacking skills you still needed to look around for ways to open doors, the whole map didn't just suddenly become available to you
b). Some parts of the map still remained off limits to you, including some bypasses/entry routes, and you had to decide which way to go - risk going through the main entrance, or waste a ton of multitools and lockpicks to go through a side entrance, or try to find the guy that has the codes/keys. There is always a tradeoff, and no "right" way.

In DX3, it's as if there is almost always the "right" way to go in - one that has no downsides but only rewards.

Altogether, that diminishes replay potential. You can explore everything on your first go, and find all the "right" ways in. Yes, you can make the game more difficult for yourself by playing without any hacking augs, but that's not quite the same.

I've replayed the original DX a few times, and there are still areas that I never got to see / dialogues that I never encountered / key characters that I never realized I could kill "early" or leave alive.

Well that's the problem with prequels, the technology is almost always wrong for the in-game fiction. Like how in the Star Wars prequels all the tech looked way slicker despite being set earlier, and then Vader's control box on the front of his suit looked retarded and out of place.

I haven't played DX3, but yeah I could see that part of it being less interesting. Although it was kind of irritating in the early stages of the original when you couldn't hack into anything without wasting a million lockpicks/multitools. I think I prefer the implementation in the latest Bethesda games where you have a chance to pick a lock if your skills suck, it's just less likely that you'll do it without breaking a few lockpicks.

It's still a good game, worth playing.

In DX1, I unlocked doors with the GEP gun

Yeah. Can you even do that in DX3? Point is, I don't know, a few praxis kits made sure I maxed out my hacking skills early on and I could just hack my way through every door.

Not to mention the fact that you see:

-A computer
-A locked door
-A cracked wall
-A vent

whenever you need to enter some place. All in the same square foot.

But yes, the technology is all fucked up. How do you explain that Gunther Hermann looks like the deformed lovechild of robocop and a vending machine, while Adam had very functional and well implemented augs years, decades even, before Hermann? Why is everything in a renaissance-like setting? Stylish as it may be, the original game didn't even have the slightest hint of it.

I'm not saying it's not a decent game, it is. I had a lot of fun playing it. Some mechanics really made it feel like a Deus Ex-game. Other things just didn't make sense though.

Yeah, it's ironical that the original made over a decade ago was more realistic. This one just didn't seem rooted in reality, more like a fantasy game, while the original felt very much like what the future could look like.

And I lol'd at "deformed lovechild of robocop and a vending machine"

Here's some facts.

-Both were very good games.
-I have replayed the original probably over 50 times.
-I have only played DE3 once with no intention to replay it.
