LA PORTE, Texas – Four La Porte High School students are accused of making a bomb and setting it off on the front porch of a home.

Justyn Vela, Marc Gonzalez, Nicholas Lara and Manuel Camacho are all charged with possessing a prohibited weapon.

According to investigators, the boys mixed potassium nitrate, sugar and baking soda together, then detonated the device on a doormat at a home in the 5500 block of Rock Springs on February 18, 2012.

Investigators said the resident heard the doorbell ring, but when she opened the door, no one was there and her doormat was on fire.

Once investigators identified the teens as their suspects, they said Gonzalez and Lara gave written statements confessing to their roles in the crime and implicating the other two.

Gonzalez reportedly told investigators that they did it because they wanted to harass a girl who lived at the home.

Investigators said La Porte High School officials identified all four suspects as students.

They mixed KNO3 with sugar and made some rocket candy. That's hardly a fucking bomb. At worst it's an incendiary device.

Granted they should not have lit it on some girl's front porch and had they not they wouldn't be in trouble right now, but fucking come on. Kids don't even know how to make proper bombs.

You mean smoke bomb mix. Rocket candy would replace the baking soda (meant to keep down reaction temperature) with red iron oxide aka rust (as a catalyst to accelerate flame speed).

I agree Louis, the media generally knows jack shit about anything, but as MediumD pointed out they'll happily exaggerate an incident just for the ratings...
The police are just as bad, and it's the exact same thing over here in good ol' Denmark.

I have a solution to the problem though, but anyone helping to better the situation will run the risk of getting a nasty visit from the local law-lords, asking a whole heap of stupid questions, and I assume most of us could do without...

Anyway, the solution is to educate the public at any chance we get; if the majority of the sheeple that inhabits our planet are fully aware of what exactly it takes to produce various energetic compounds, casings, ignition mechanisms and so on, no one in their right mind would take retarded media reports seriously...
But as I said before, anyone actually speaking openly about these things are in danger of getting a surprise visit from the 5-0 who'd really like to know where you got that info, what you plan on using it for, and why you acquired the info in the first place, if you also hoard a bunch of illegal weapons, why you're planning a terrorist attack, what you have in your pockets, and so on and so forth...
For some odd reason they've never gotten the memo every intelligence agent knows by heart, that "capacity does not equal motive".
Personally I don't give a shit, got my permits in order, probably know more about the legislation in this area than any of them, and got nothing to hide so those bitches can bring it on all they like but they'll most likely end up getting ripped a boatload of new assholes in court, should they decide to show up.

I realize not everyone else has got a neat little certificate to flip at the cops, so I should in some way try to "lead by example" so to speak, by openly speaking up, which is exactly what I do every time I get the chance.
I have no idea how many people I've passed on detailed info to over the years, but it's at least in the hundreds, and it's my hope that they'll keep spreading it far and wide.
Remember, sharing knowledge isn't morally wrong (or illegal, but that's less relevant), so educate those around you at every chance you get and hopefully we can change this situation where all the idiots swallow everything the media or cops throws at them, raw, out of ignorance.

The only way to "accidentally" fire up RDX with an electric shock I can picture is if you're doing the final steps right next to a malfunctioning tesla coil...

And anything that POTENTIALLY can make a "boom" will be handled by reporters/cops as if you'd be a McVeigh copycat. Hell they even call acid+aluminum bottles BOMBS...

The language used in this is important.

Can that compound truly be 'detonated'? Wouldn't it simply be 'ignited'? Are they going to start charging people that light bags of dog shit on peoples porches with explosive offences now? What about people that adjust their cigarette lighter to create a long flame?

Secondly the use of the word 'harass' wasn't the ideal term to use.

#1 -In the right concentrations methane can, when ignited, cause an explosion, provided it is properly contained at the point of ignition.

#2 -Methane is a byproduct of digestion, and thus commonly occurring in for example mammals.
