What kind of attitude is that to save the world, obviously you dont really want to save the world. You just want people to think you care about the world.

Re: Let's save the world
Tomorrow came early! Usually I hate when that happens, but not today. It's funny how sometimes sad songs can make me feel better.
So! I'm on my way to a BA in English Literature. Can this somehow be utilized in a way that would save the world? I also plan on going to grad school, because I'm awesome. No idea what I will do there, maybe more English or psychology or something. And I'm minoring in math, for whatever reason. Any idea how I can move on from there?
Now, to me, it feels like this is my first step toward saving the world. Obtaining degrees, validating myself in the eyes of others. What's your first (next?) step?

Knowledge is power, so yes your degree is certainly a good thing. I'd recommend tossing in a little sociology/social justice classes, they can be great for what you want to do.
After your degree, I suggest volunteering for different causes and finding one that really speaks to you, then become a full-time activist in that area. I'm currently studying electrical engineering. I want to help people by improving technology, but also there are tons of social issues that tech won't fix. I plan on lots of philanthropy and volunteering, plus always being vocal about issues.
Standing up for people = saving the world. Maybe not the whole world all at once, but a small part of it.

Re: Let's save the world
Save the Earth?
Why bother? It's a waste of time. You talk about people wasting their lives, but you're the one who's wasting yours. You're in live with a ghost - a phantom. Society is already dead and all your hopes and dreams and prayers won't bring it back to life. It was doomed the moment it became a snake eating its own tail and refused to change.
Society is a fraud so complete and venal that it demands to be destroyed beyond the power of memory to recall its existence.
The poison winds sweep over the vast graveyards that were once cities, but here in Southern Cross is one of the last few places left where the water is uncontaminated and you can eat what you grow. And eventually it will all be gone. The animals, the trees, the people... all of it. And all that will remain is just a dead and barren ball of rock, spinning through space.
So you see, when there is no future, we must take what we can.

Re: Let's save the world
So out of curiosity, what does someone do with an English degree? I only know one guy who did it and he's a special ed teacher (and loves his job for what that's worth). So is that the typical career English majors pursue?

You can become a high school teacher and work on brainwashing young minds with that degree.

Yeah, idk. I guess it's for people who want to become English teachers. With an M.A. in English, you can teach at the college level. But I think most people destined to go beyond their Bachelor's who go with English do so because they love literature and language, and then seek their Master's in something more practical, like philosophy.

One of my friends majored in creative writing and is now working a decent job as a journalist.
A lot of people major in English for pre-law.

Ahh, that makes sense. I've thought about law school after I get my B.S. since you need a bachelors in a technical field to practice intellectual property law. IP law has always seemed pretty interesting to me, really kind of a new and exciting facet of the law(relatively speaking), and one I think is pretty important. Plus I hear the pay isn't half bad . Not sure I could stand any more education though, even four years before actually doing something is a bit hard to handle sometimes.

Yeah, apparently EE majors are in high demand for IP lawyers and I've always been a legal nerd anyways. Like you said though, three years of law school...I don't know. That's pretty much an engineering doctorate right there. If I had to choose between the two, the PhD seems more appealing.
