Holy fuck, you need to not steal anything if you know this little about the retail store biz.
But the truth is, as long it isn't some fuking computer or something that has to have the serial number inputted for warranty/legal (think guns) reason, then a bar code is just a way for the store to know what brand/model they are ringing up. The UPC is the same for every item on the shelf.
Yes, this will work, kinda. Keep in mind LP's job is to watch for dumb kids that look like they're doing something wrong. Also, remember receipts are time stamped. IMHO you're better off scanning the parking lot for receipts that were paid w/ cash, then going into the store, grabbing the item. Then going to the desk and returning it.
CASH=No trail. If you do this with a credit card with your name, keep in mind they'll have your info, man. So big ticket items COULD come back and bite you in the ass........
