It's the cropped perspective of our experience uncropping itself. As in, you step out of the singular experience into the experience where you see that time really is not linear, which is what creates the "WHOA, I've SEEN this before!" feeling - because you have been seeing the same exact thing your whole life, but have been convinced that its a story being told rather than a teller making a story.
It's like peaking your head out of the top of a canopy and seeing the entire jungle.

From what I understand it's something like your long term memory and short term memory cross, causing you to 'recall' what's going on at the current as a memory. knowing it can't be, you'll pass it off as a dream. it's all just your brain fucking up for a second and trying to act cool like nothing happened.

This is probably the most accurate and succinct explanation.
The feeling I get though - I don't know how to describe it, if it's an emotional feeling or what - when I experience deja vu is unlike anything I've ever felt before. Almost like...a longing mixed up with satisfaction and a dash of melancholy or something. I don't know. Deja vu makes me feel strange.
