Default New to freeweights, need halp badly

Basically, I read starting strength and all that stuff and it's totally convinced me that training with barbells and proper form is the way to go. I'm trying to get something similar to the 5x5 stronglifts program going. (Note: please don't turn this thread into a war over which strength training program is better, that's not what this thread is supposed to be about).

Here's the difficulty. I have upper and lower cross syndrome, i.e. a lifetime (including childhood) of "computer posture". I've done a lot in the past two years to counteract it, and I'm standing up straighter and using my muscles more correctly than I have ever in my life, but I still have problems. Basically, I have never truly been strong or active. In recent years, I've been pretty fit in that I have endurance, and I'm strong enough that I can lift heavy objects and shit better than most of my buddies (I think I'm naturally more of a mesomorph, even though I don't believe in that typing stuff) but I've never really used my body the way an athlete would. A lot of my muscles have trouble working together, I feel. In other words, because of a sedentary lifestyle, even though I'm stronger now than I've ever been, there are still parts of my body I've never used right.

For example: I can't do a proper squat. I think this is because some muscle in my hips must be underdeveloped or tight because the mobility/coordination down there is shit. If I try to do a squat with the proper technique, I will start to fall over backwards, or at least not get "deep" enough. This is, of course, with no weight, I don't want to make a complete fool of myself in the gym but I will if I try to squat and just land on my ass.

I don't want to start rambling, I guess I'm trying to ask: does anybody have experience going from total office jockey who's never strength trained to strongman? I'm particularly having trouble with squats, I know they're awesome and from an anatomical standpoint they're exactly what my body needs but only if I can do them correctly. Can you give tips to someone who wants to use the whole "starting strength" philosophy but has never spent much time in a gym? I hate to admit this, but I haven't really ever "worked out" save for some machine bullshit I would try off and on with no results.

How do you get into this shit? I finally have the time and the motivation, but I'm having so much trouble making it happen.

You have the money to buy some dumbbells and weight plates?
When it comes to those 5-10 minutes a day would make all the difference for someone in your scenario.

You doin' push ups? Get off your ass as soon as you read this fucking sentence and give me a set

I can do push ups no prob. I do a set during commercials when I watch TV, it might be why my chest looks the best out of all my body parts cuz I did that a lot when I was a teenager. Same with crunches and planks. Actually, I can bench a pretty good amount for someone who's never hit the gym. It's more the new movements that involve my whole body working together, like squats and deadlifts, that are giving me trouble.

For the forseeable future I have free access to a gym with all that equipment. I kinda head-trip going out in public and trying things out for the first time, though.

Good, good. Better than I thought at least. Stick to movement that don't involve the whole body then kid.

Access to a gym? Just don't smoke weed before you go and you won't be so self-conscious. Keep it simple when you go to.

But... I want to get good at those things, it's not that I can't do them but rather that my body doesn't know those positions yet. I want to do whatever I can to ease into it so I can basically get myself ready for the real thing.

It's not like I'm injured, it's more like my body's been frozen and I need to thaw it out before I can get truly strong.

Well, there's flexibility right there man.

If you want to lift keep it simple kidB curls, DB presses, DB upright rows, side lateral raises, farmers walks, etc.

"DB" as in dumbbell

There's no such thing as good posture and no such thing as proper form.

Back squats are gay anyway, don't do them.

Routine:

Front squat

Snatch

Three times a day lift to maximum, no matter how bad you feel. Never perform more than one repetition per exercise. For proper technique (unrelated to "form") keep your muscles LIMP at all times and remember this: always get the lift done as quickly as possible from the beginning. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS maintain a LIMP grip on the barbell. Your hands should be partially open.

Oh, by the way there's no point in even touching a weight if you're not taking steroids so you must take them. Your primary drug is no-ester testosterone, inject 25mg of it every other day, your secondary drug is dianabol, take 30mg of it every day.

Brainwashing works quite well then. Nobody has ever gained well off that stupid fucking program Mark Rippetoe put together. There is one guy Rippetoe uses as an example of his programs effectiveness but the guy just got fat.

You'll have to counteract this with the correct mobility and agility drills. Weights will add to the imbalance particularly in a progressive manner as in Rippetoes. I had a friend who was 6'3" and lanky and struggled like hell to squat, in fact he couldn't reach the bar to dead lift with flat feet, so I put him through mobility work for a few months and he was fine.

To become very strong everything needs to be in order from your digestion, posture, athleticism. Most strongmen come from various athletic backgrounds and merge into that kind of training. Squats are not what your body needs, the legs are extremely strong and enduring anyway. When do you ever walk up to a weight in real life, put it on the shoulders and slowly sit down with it? The only thing squats are really good for is overloading the legs past the point of no return, they're not really that good anatomically.

If you starting from the beginning, start off with mobility drills and bodyweight exercises. If you can't do the following, you should not be lifting weights:

50 consecutive pushups
15 consecutive pullups
25 parallel bar dips
climb a 30ft rope with no legs
hop 50m on either leg
100 bodyweight squats
2 minute plank

Rippetoes is essentially a watered down powerlifting program, and please note powerlifting is the worst thing to get into if you want to remain athletic.

Grin Re: New to freeweights, need halp badly

Work whatever muscles are giving you most gip, not so fucking hard. You said it yourself, some muscles are more trained than others. If it's posture i would reccommend working on your obliques and lats with the aid of a pull down machine, medicine ball and 5/6kg weight. There's so many exercises that can be done with the ball and weight. I'm seriously fucking ripped just of using free weights and a medicine ball for abdominal exercises. There are machines i use but that does not matter if you prefer the former ball and weight method. Sorry to state the obvious but you have to make sure your eating right with a well balanced diet or you can forget it, especially if you have a slow motabilism. I'm eating fish, red meat with a side dish of salads, sweet potatoes and eggs and adding more with each new thing i find. I wouldn't take the steroid route as only faggots who can't lift do that and the results suck. Big reddened beef cake with hair loss and roid rage, fuck that shit, i don't think any girls i've spoke to about it like that look anyway.

Anyways if your going down the supplement route there are products that decrease the time it will take you to get big without having to stick a needle in your ass:

Anabolic creatine : Norateen -This shit is seriously hardcore providing you put the time in and it's absored very fast. Easily one the best if not the best product i have used out there.

http://www.lamuscle.com/products/nor...-7-days-supply

Gold standard Whey: - Supposedly one the best ones out there but to be honest most average whey proteins you buy can be just as good. Great tasting flavours and good meal substitute should you not feel hungry. Try the double/ extreme chocolate.

Shitload of videos on youtube showing squat form. I started as a chubby chair-jockey with no muscle but never lost balance when doing squats. Might want to get 30 minutes 1-on-1 with someone for that.

Eating right os just as important as workig out. That is a fact, make sure you get enough calories to put on mass.

Muscle doesnt materialize out of thin air, you need a calorie excess

Look up Scott Herman on Youtube. Ive just recently started working out using his programs/techniques and in one week of pushing myself I saw some great gains. Ive been working out for a year and I just recently hit a plateau and this workout has been great so far. Just have to finish nursing my injury :@

lunges with DBs or a barbell right behind your neck(like a squat) would probably help you. whatever sets/reps you want to, but I would stick with 3x10 as a base to start out with instead of that starting strength bullshit
