And the college hacking continues!

I've decided I'll probably set up a VPN/seedbox for torrenting, and use TOR for anything questionable, but before all that I want to speed up my internet. The wifi here isn't terribly slow, but if a lot of people are on it can lag a good amount, and if I'm already running TOR it's a pain in the ass. Luckily there are ethernet ports in all the dorm rooms, which are pretty fast. I could just plug into ethernet but that's too easy.

I grabbed an old router from home, plugged it into the ethernet port, and logged onto my laptop via my new wifi network. Everything ran really fast (as should be expected) for about 3 minutes until a notice popped up saying "you have accessed the internet from an unauthorized router. please disconnect immediately and your internet account will be re-instated."

Question 1) HOW DID THEY KNOW?!?!?!
Question 2) What can I do to set up my own wifi from the substantially faster campus ethernet?

The wifi is campus wide and I'm getting ~75mbs but the ethernet is done room by room and I'm getting ~150mbs when I'm plugged into ethernet. I don't want to have an ethernet cord connected to my computer though, so I want to set up an wifi connection in my room without the college knowing about it.

This is what you do:

I'm assuming your college campus has some way of registering game consoles so they can access Xbox Live & PSN, If you have a console or a friend has one, register that console's MAC address with your college. Then spoof your router's MAC to the console's MAC so when you plug your router into the ethernet port it appears to be the game console you registered. Then you can route all your network traffic through that and you don't have to go through any of the bullshit network security crap.

I did this my freshman year and my school uses Cisco Clean Access... it bypassed Cisco and I didn't have Cisco or the required antivirus installed on any of my machines because of it. Fuck that shit I wasn't installing crap software on my personal computer! I used that the whole year in the dorms and no one ever noticed, I didn't even spoof the MAC I just registered the router's native MAC as an Xbox 360 and no one questioned it. Our networking guy looks up MACs now though if I was a freshman this year I'd have to spoof it to get the same results.

they most likely detect it through the user agent header.

switching yours will allow you to use the network without logging in. for example right now im showing up as running firefox 10 on linux, even tho im on vista.

yea i never login their whole stupid fucking network the whole year. user agent switcher bitch.

also try intercepting ARP packets. and id be willing to bet that if you mess up and they "quarantine" you or something stupid for a set time period after u get detected using a torrent or something all you have to do is switch your mac address.

also for lulz use nmap on the whole local network, but spoof ur fucking mac address before you do this and dont do it while signed in with credentials...lol. i wouldnt do it from ethernet either lest they know where each line goes.

Ok new question here guys: Are they legally allowed to search my computer? I've fucked with the network enough that I'm kinda getting worried. I heard a rumor that they confiscated and searched a kid's computer a couple years ago. I've got stuff that links me to Bitcoin and knowledge of darkweb/Silk Road (like having GPG Keychain Access programs and TOR) but there isn't really anything directly linking me to anything illegal. Anything that I need to download that's "less than legal" I save to a TrueCrypt flashdrive and I run CCleaner weekly.

Two main questions:
1) Can they legally search my computer?
2) If yes to 1, or even if no, do I have my bases covered on security?

Optional question #3) They can't see the sites I've visited on TOR, can they?

no they are not legally allowed. the police would need a warrant.

encrypt. Truecrypt is a great product and free if I do recall. They can't make you, don't surrender your rights because that's exactly what they count on once they get you to panic (hint: this may well be your panic stage).

Absolutely nothing, I just like to be prepared. I also might have figured out how to re-code our student ID's and have been altering them so that I can get into my friends' rooms (the locks are mag strips like in hotels). I'm going to stop doing that now though haha
