Re: 1980s/1990s no-stal-GEE-yah
I was born in 1992, so I was only 7 when the 1990s ended.
I grew up in the 2000s. This decade seriously sucks, it's horrible. This is probably the most unhappy and paranoid decade of all time.
9/11 is the defining moment of the decade, even though it was in 2001. Terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Every American immediately became intensely paranoid that Muslims are the enemy. The United States became "constantly under the threat of another serious terrorist attack". Because the nation is paralyzed in fear of another terrorist attack, absolutely ANYthing can be done as long if it is done in the name of national security. The Department of Homeland Security was created. New security measures were put into place, everywhere. The PATRIOT Act passed with flying colors. This of course allowed the government to spy on citizens, skipping due process. The War in Iraq? Well, "we have to fight the terrorists." No liquids on planes? "We have to fight the terrorists". Stripping away rights? "We have to fight the terrorists". Anyone who is against any measure of national security, even misguided and pointless ones, is "for the enemy".
Anyway, face to face interaction is being destroyed even more. Now most interaction is texting, internet, phone, etc. This makes people more callous, detached, and lacking in social skills. Humans need the presence of others, not voice or words. Culture is being destroyed, or moving online. The downtowns are dying in most cities. This is mostly due to inner city crime (this is not new to the 2000s however). Most business is moved to the suburbs. No more mom and pop shops, big corporations like WalMart come in. No central location to hang out and meet people in cities. People don't even look face to face at you anymore, always on the cell phone.
The social movement has actually been positive, like previous decades. As a positive for 2000s, the seeds have been sown for the marijuana movement. It will happen in a few decades or so but this is where it really started. The gay movement has come to fruition in the 2000s, and continues to grow. The right wing (at least the politicians) have gotten continuously more extreme, a major backslide from the late 90s/early 2000s. LSD is pretty much gone this decade. The huge bust was in 2002, and it hasn't returned. The environmental situation is not improving yet, but awareness is being spread. IMO The environment will become the globe's biggest issue in a few decades. I mean HUGE, as in there will be a serious catastrophe.
The economy ended on a poor note. The 2000s had a ton of consumer overspending and greed. The housing bubble popped. Due to mortgage backed securities and derivatives, the whole 2010s are screwed economically.

Re: 1980s/1990s no-stal-GEE-yah
Lol, the 2000s were ridiculous. I don't think there will be very many "2000s nostalgia" threads. A cultural black hole, kind of like the 80s. Hopefully this decade will be more interesting. Demographically speaking, there was a minor population boom from the late 80s to the mid 90s; as this group reaches adulthood there should hopefully be an accompanying minor boom in the arts. We'll see. I anything, though, that generation really doesn't seem much different from generation x, so perhaps there's nothing authentic or new to offer. Culture - or at least pop culture - seems very dry at the moment.

Toy Story, Donkey Kong Country, Toonami, Linkin Park, Harry Potter, Pokemon, Ocarina of Time and Mario 64.
I almost shed a tear.
I remember the first time I've beaten Mario 64 and really enjoyed the credits.
I remember how Taco Bell used to pack nintendo toys in their kids meal along with the mask toys. I remember how I bought almost all the collectable goldplated pokemon pokeballs from burgerking.
Fuck you, OP.

Re: 1980s/1990s no-stal-GEE-yah
OP sounds like a faggot.
But there are things about the 90's I do miss. Kids could still be kids, we could ride our bikes around in big groups and get into mischeif and fuck shit up, and the cops weren't all hyper PC cuntish yet. You could still start fires, play with fire, smash things, etc BB guns weren't illegal. My city still had water and we could have massive waterfights in summer. We could ride our little motorbikes in the street. We couldn't be contacted except if you left a message on our home answering machines or left a message with our parents. Warcraft 1 was amazing, and C&C: Red Alert was the SHIT. A charizard card was worth $80. The cartoons were so much better. Hercules and Xena were still on. I could go to the Queen Vic market and buy Samurai swords. Martin Bryant hadn't killed every one in Tassy yet and we were still allowed to own semi auto rifles. We could get in to punch ons at school and we wouldn't get charged with assult, we just had to do a 1 hour "stop think do" class. Cars had character and road trips felt like actual trips. Hitting electronics like TV's and video players could still fix them or make static go away. Mix tapes were a labour of love. Having a CD burner was practically a license to print money. "Throwing rocks" was still considered "playing". Trampolines didn't have gay ass nets around them, or padding.

I remember when fat people were gross and not made, from ways of brainwashing, into something "attractive".
On a lighter note...

Some fucked up shit. Everything went monochrome, every character had a barcode printed on them, it was basically became some kind of a distopian world where everyone is slave-like. I think the main guy character fell out of the game cube before that happened so he was the only one not affected.
Can't remember how it all got resolved.

Political correctness has been around for thousands of years, and it was arguably a more powerful force in the 1990s than it is today when you take in to account the sheer number of confused titty-baby retards who whine about it now compared to yesteryear.

Political correctness (not portraying black people as buffoons with lips that took up half their faces, or latinos as little mice that were either eating tacos or sleeping with their backs against a cactus) really became a big thing in this country in the late '60s/early to mid '70s with the myriad of minority rights activists and groups popping up. It was reflected in the television and movies, with more stuff addressing interracial marriage/relationships, single mothers, and inner city poverty.
The 1990s had cultural battles, where Christian fundamentalist idiots were murdering doctors, bombing abortion clinics and barbequing themselves en masse.

Fundamentalist Muslims are nasty too, but Afghan caves and desert tents don't fit American definitions of "civilized".
It's not all Christians that are like that, though, just like it isn't all Muslims that carry out suicide bombings/guided missile attacks with jumbo jets. Most Christians/Muslims follow the moral teachings of Christ/Muhammad without blowing themselves and everyone within a 50 foot radius to bloody smithereens or burying people who are sexually attracted to others of the same sex under big boulders. It's the rotten apples that spoil the whole barrel in the media's, and subsequently in the public's eye.

Re: 1980s/1990s no-stal-GEE-yah
Actually, only the terrorists are the ones who truly follow the morals of the books. They're not civilized religions to begin with because they are both revolutionary in nature. The default state of Christian and Muslim religious practice is warfare; it was only until adherence to these religions died out that constant war in Europe (including the middle east) died out.
The "peaceful" Christians and Muslims do not even follow the religions or the morals themselves; they merely identify as "Christian" or "Muslim" and attend service from time to time, if ever. You cannot logically follow the teachings of the Bible God or Mohammad without killing people.
