however, people are lazy and want to believe short anecdotal explanations of things because simple explanations are easy to understand and repeat

but hey- at least we have the minds to talk about this stuff; most people would rather ignore it, or dig in their heels and repeat simple minded explanations to keep from falling too deep into their thoughts
