Michael Crichton jumps shark posthumously
To be specific, his latest book, Micro, was unfinished at his death, and was completed by, I think, Robert Preston.
I like most of his stuff (the endings of Congo and Sphere sucked, though)--I even bought the quantum time travel thing in one of his books.
This last one is just bloody ridiculous. The characters do these amazingly stupid things just to advance the plot (like in every cheesy horror flick out there), and the main macguffin is this absurd deal where characters can get instantaneously shrunk to like an inch high without harm.
I gave it fifty pages before setting it aside in disgust.

Re: Michael Crichton jumps shark posthumously
I read one of his books where the main thrust of the story was that global warming was just a big myth cooked up by eco-terrorists. It was pretty bad.

I liked Sphere.
And fifty pages is a little soon to give up on a novel. Maybe give it another fifty and it will get better?

Re: Michael Crichton jumps shark posthumously
Some books were pretty entertaining, some were boring and filled with tons of useless information.
They were mostly for entertainment though, not really enlightening but better to read when taking a shit than the back of a soap bottle.

Re: Michael Crichton jumps shark posthumously
The one NEXT is an example of being too technical and not really having a strong story line. Hate that. I don't care about the specifics of genetics just tell me a story.
