Re: Why do Americans call a fringe "bangs"
Who do they call crisps chips? The world may never know. The real question is why does it bother you...everyone has different names for things. For example in Spanish I call a pen a boligrafo but people in other Spanish speaking countries say pluma. See?

In Australia, bangs(fringes) are called 'Miggawatts'
And crisps(chips) are called 'Plotts'

I like how americans say 'aluminum' and insist it's correct. Same with "I could care less" when they clearly mean to say they couldn't care less.

Bangs are bits of hair which are part of the fringe that hang down the sides of your face.

If they're part of the fringe they're still fringe.

I don't really care about the different names that Americans have for things. If they want to call "pavements" "sidewalks" and "lifts" "elevators" then that's cool. But the "I could care less" thing is just fucking dumb. The whole point of the phrase "I couldn't care less" implies that there is no way you could care less about what the person is saying because the subject disinterests you so much. However the phrase, "I could care less," implies that you are slightly interested because there is another way that you could be more unconcerned about way they are saying.
Americans take note. I'm helping you with your language.
On another international linguist point, do you know the French have no phrase for "Good morning"? They have the words good and morning but they never thought to combine them. I can only image this is because no one in France gets up before midday because they spent the entire night drinking fine wine, painting abstract paintings, having sex and bemoaning other cultures for being inferior to theirs. Fucking Frogs.

Re: Why do Americans call a fringe "bangs"
Not all American's say "I could care less." I ream anyone who says that and then correct them.
I just say "I'm stoned I don't give a fuck." I think that one is easier to work with and just generally better.
