Running Ten miles
i recently started running ten miles everyday and i was wondering if this is okay.
is it healthy? My legs get sore but not in a bad way but just sore like i have been running a shit load.
should i take a break once or twice a week?
Or should i just take a break if i feel i need it?

LOL well duh your running 10 miles a day man , Im no physician and anything i say will be pulled from out of my ass but 10 miles seems pretty steep , what exactly are you trying to get by doing that much cardio?
Idk , why not just cut it to 5 miles a day? or like 2 miles a day ..... I'll let you wait for a real answer but god damn 10 miles a day blows my chubby little mind

Re: Running Ten miles
My mom always ran a shitload cuz she trains for marathons and what have you, but now she has bad feet and a bad back. If you're just doing it for the cardio I would suggest switching up with some lower impact exercise, like a bike or elliptical.

Same, my mom ran a couple marathons and ended up fucking up her knee. Now she can't run at all.

Re: Running Ten miles
Um, it depends on your fitness level and what you're going for, really. If you're knocking out ten miles and it isn't bothering you too much, then 1) I'm impressed, and 2) Keep going. But you do need to rest at least one day a week, and I'd suggest biking/swimming/ellipitcals to help keep it switched up on you.

Re: Running Ten miles
well the reason running works for me is because i just run out into the country i can look around and see the scenery. Where as if i use the eliptical machine i get bored after about ten maybe 20 minutes if i keep pushing myself but then i get bored. but running out in the country is fun and the time seems to fly by.

Re: Running Ten miles
Well, shit, in my mind, you're either trolling, or you're much healthier than I. I can't keep up a solid run for 2mi. Probably half that.
But shit, I try, I walked 30mi the other week, I'm no stranger to covering distance on foot.
If you do it daily with no ill effects, fine. But it's real distance, and no one here can tell you you can do it forever with no ill effects.

Re: Running Ten miles
well i was watching this documentary Running the Sahara and these guys ran like 40-50 miles a day so i figured i can run at least a fourth of that and so i did. and it helps if you run away from your house because the quikest way back is running back.

Re: Running Ten miles
I used to run 5 miles a day, then realized I hated it so I changed up my cardio workouts to something more fun and less harsh on the joints. 10 miles a day is a lot if its just for physical fitness imo, if you want to train for something, then ok, but just for cardio exercises then ya, do something else, it'l come back to you when you get older.

Re: Running Ten miles
It's common for an elite long distance runner to take a leisurely 10 mile run on what is considered a light day, like say Sunday.
They're running at may 65 - 70 of their race speed.
If you can knock off 10 miles with barely an effort, you'd be joining thousands of runners who run nearly everyday, if not every day.
But if you're tired after 10 miles, you're not ready to keep up that kind of mileage yet, is my guess.
I should also add that most elite long distance runners weigh less than 150 pounds.
So if you're much heavier, I'd imagine you're pounding your body/bones/feet/joints harder and need more rest time.

As long as you don't mind not being able to walk in your older ages you'll be fine I guess.

If you stop and ask an old man who can barely walk, I bet hardly any of them were runners.
In the least, runners have about the same old age joint problems as non runners, not more.
In fact runners are more likely to have better joints in old age, as running seems to encourage thicker joint cartilage, not less
.
People also used to think running was bad for the heart.

I've heard this as well, but my knees beg to differ. No, I was not bad at running. I just ran a lot and now I have arthritis. Shit happens. Of course I stopped running, and that may be the problem. Good on ya if you can run every day, or even every week, for the rest of your life. I got a job and shit, I can't.

If you're running because you love running, keep at it buddy, just make sure you've got some bomb ass shoes.
If you're just doing it to burn calories, try doing some HIIT instead.

You should always takes some breaks. Give your body time to repair the damage you're doing to it; you don't need to run every day.

Re: Running Ten miles
I think it's more the theory of "we should have been running barefoot all these years."
Our toes/feet have actually evolved to the shape of our shoes, to the point where barefoot running like a caveman isn't viable. I would however like to try some of those Vibram 5 gecko feet things though, I'm sure once you get used to them they are wonderful.

Re: Running Ten miles
you all are girly men too afraid to take the plunge and begin jogging
there are SOO many excuses as to why you shouldn't or cant jog,
the human body is designed for running the long distance, we may not be able to keep pace with the antelope but over the course of an afternoon the four-legged will grow tired long before our lanky african ancestors would
granted 10 miles a day is probably enough to do some damage to your joints, it seems a tad excessive.
I am a light light but I maintain a schedule of 3.5 miles every other day

XC and T&F Runner:
You've gotta build up to 10 miles. You can't just start doing 10 miles one day. You will get an injury. Shin splints, pulled tendons, etc.
Do 3 miles for 6 days a week, then 4 miles, then 5, so on until you can do 10.
