Thoughts on Tool's next album
Well, it's coming. Either late this year or early next. I've recently bought tickets to see them in Edmonton in July and I'd like to get some thoughts on where the band is going.
I can't remember where I heard this but some fellow said he heard them playing one of the songs they were writing for the upcoming album and he said it was a complex composition similar to what was heard on Wings for Marie and 10000 Days (track, not album). If I were a betting man, I would say they are probably heading in that direction of long, complex compositions which are more akin to a classical piece than anything else. With the attention span of kids these days, I'm not sure how will this will initially go over. I remember people saying 10000 Days was their worst album when it first came out because people couldn't grasp it at first, but like all Tool music, it took a while for the music to 'soak in'. I kind of hope the whole album isn't like that though, as I think Tool is at their best when they have those moments of release that take them back to the days of Aenima and Lateralus. The thing I'm looking most forward to is hearing what kind of shit Danny is going to come up with. His work on 10000 Days was mind-blowing, and he continues to get better and better and better. I can't fucking wait.
Thoughts?

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
I didn't know they were planning a next album
I love all their albums, not so much the earlier stuff such as Opiate and Undertow, but Aenima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days were awesome. I did like 10,000 Days, but felt like there were a little too many slow songs that kind of dragged on. I'm in the same boat as you. I'd like to see their new album go back to what Aenima and Lateralus are like. They have a nice balance of heavy, slow, interludes etc.
Looking forward to the artwork too

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
Yeah, I'd personally like an album that goes back to Aenima and Undertow, however they always have an ever evolving sound so we could expect anything. It's gotta be good, they take like 4 or 5 years to make an album.

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
yeah, for once they actually openly admitted to working on new shit; a few months back, already.
I liked 10,000 Days, but I was hoping for an expansion on Lateralus. hopefully that's what this new album will be. if noone noticed, theres a video of Adam playing the Wings for Marie riff sometime around 2001-2002, while Maynard did a little bit of talking.
when I seen them at Bonnaroo (year after 10,000 days coming out) they had some little moments like that. maynard talking to some really neat instrumental shit. if those instrumentations are a hint on what the next album will be like, than I'm stoked.

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
Im excited. They can only really move forward musically, so don't expect anything like they've done before.
I hope they put out more tour dates for this summer. I've gotta see them again.

It'll be interesting to hear how their sound evolves this time around. They could use a leap in a direction, and I hope we get that form this next album.

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
As I said earlier, I'm most anticipating Danny Carey's percussion work, but I think next to that, I always enjoy getting a glimpse into Maynard's mind, via his lyrics. You can sort of follow how his mind has evolved over the years. In the early days you could hear the voice of an angry youth, which turned into a sort of cynicism in the days of Aenima, particularly on that track. Lateralus saw Maynard turn into himself, with lyrics focused on consciousness expansion and moral themes. In 10000 Days it seemed like he came to terms with some with inner demons (a la Jambi and 10000 Days) and also offered a critical look at society and humans as a whole. I find that Maynard's lyrics can be a very accurate reflection of society, so I'm curious to see how he sees the world around him in this day and age.

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
I'd love to see another Perfect Circle album more than a Tool one right now, IMO.

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
I, too, would like another APC album. But it's not gonna happen. Howerdale has Ashes dIvide to tend to and Maynard has Tool AND Puscifer. They've also confirmed they won't be making new music. Not in album form anyway. Soundtrack stuff, mostly.

The real question is - When do we get our live concert DVD?

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
So they're taking a Dream Theater approach? I like.
EDIT: Also, it is kind of cool that this whole forum has a general liking towards Tool. Can't say that about many other bands.

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
I'm so fucking excited for this album. My friend was telling me he heard an interview with them on the radio and they said they wanted to make this album into a movie eventually. (Similar to The Wall)

Re: Thoughts on Tool's next album
^That would be insane, I think I recall hearing something about that as well.
With Adam's experience in feature films, that could easily be one of the most ambitious and visionary pieces of artwork ever made.
