A History Forum

I think it would be nice to have a forum in the "Society" section where users could discuss historical events and there impact and relevance on today's society. We have a user base that contains members from almost every corner of the globe. I remember in my senior year in high school a government class I took that required a subscription to an English translated version of a Soviet magazine similar in scope to the Life or Newsweek.

I can recall an issue that was published in May that had it's main focus on The Soviet Victory Day celebration. Even then I found history fascinating and was an avid reader of WWII history. Of course my exposure to WWII was largely limited to the U.S. perspective at that time for obvious reasons. At the age of 17, when I read the Soviet accounts of WWII I felt I was reading about an entirely different event than the WWII I knew.

It was then that I woke up and realized that to really know and understand history you had to get as many different perspectives as possible and compare them. In this way we can weed out many of the revisionist aspect that have always plagued those who seek the reality of what may have actually occurred.

If we had a history forum members from around the world could start threads and discuss events from the perspective taught in their nations. This would allow all of us to gain a more well rounded view of what may have actually occurred and why our world is the way we find it today. In doing so we may find we gain more tolerance for other cultures by having a better understanding of their history.

I love this idea! Almost more than I love history! Why we don't have this forum already is beyond me. I think it would instantly become one of the most popular sections on this forum.

For a name it could be called "History" or "Historical Events and Their Impact and Relevance on Today's Society"

As for moderators I nominate TheDarkRodent as he's shown great amounts of intelligence in the field of history. He types like a leader. I predict the section would get rather busy rather quickly and likely need two mods. I also nominate PizzaNazi as he has also shown much knowledge in the field.

Absolutely do I hold that a history forum would be a pleasant addition to the site. Hopefully it would not conflict with philosophical and political forums but that can't be helped much. I welcome the addition.

Whew, thanks for the disclaimer.

And thanks to everyone who posted in the thread supporting this suggestion. I really think it could be a fine addition to the board by offering people insight that could create a more tolerant community. If that could be accomplished maybe would could at least all learn to disagree in a mature fashion.

I've always thought about a historical forum, too, until someone pointed out that all historical discussions should take place in The Inhumane Condition. Anyway, I agree with this.

A history forum would be a nice addition to Zoklet. That's something Totse didn't have and I think it'll definitely add some nice fresh discussion to this place.

My first thought was, "Why would I want a bunch of dumbasses on Zoklet misinforming me about history?' After reading through your entire post, my second thought was, "Different perspectives on history would indeed be a good opportunity to learn something."

I suppose the forum would mainly attract people who are already interested in history, so poor information would probably be fairly limited, and if there is an honest discrepancy between people's historical beliefs, it would make for some interesting discussions.

I say go for it.

I voted yes though, because a history forum would be a good idea. Who would moderate it though? I'm not sure who we have with a deep enough interest in history, at least anybody who could be trusted as a moderator anyway.

What the hell kind of an option is "No, it would not be a good addtion to Zoklet and I am not interested in learning from history"? For the record, I figure there's absolutely nothing wrong with adding a history forum, but I selected that option just because it's annoyingly biased .

lol. Anyway, I don't see why it isn't worth a try. It'd be interesting to see if we could get some discussions going on the philosophy of history as well. Do it.

Anyway, what I think would be best in terms of choosing a moderator would be to open the forum for a while with an interim mod (somebody who's already a mod or an admin) and see who's posting a lot of informative, interesting stuff. After a couple weeks, choose a mod from among these informative, interesting posters. Too often new forums get created with mods who don't really give a fuck about the subject and just want to be a mod. And no, I'm not asking to be mod. When I was a mod I always found it kind of lame, TBH.

Most definitely. One only needs to glance at the mods of DP and Inhumane Condition to realize that moderating takes a back seat in the bus. Hell, has Hobo ever even posted in "his" forum? I've never seen it.

I suggest we leave it up to super mod(or whatever) like Zok or whoever, and then once a suitable mod is found among the contributors after say a month of the forum being open, offer it to them.

I like it. This idea has been brought up a few times in the past, but I thought it was a good idea back then, too. Right now, like Daily mentioned, The Inhumane Condition is the only place to discuss historical events in general, but if someone were to browse that forum looking for good historical discussion, they'd probably be disappointed. After all, with all of the other subjects that get discussed there, it's far from being a history forum. Frankly, it's kind of a pain in the ass to sort through pages of threads, only to find a few that discuss the events themselves.

I am going to try to add it, but you've got to calm down, pal. It has only been about a day.

I'm sure there's still a good argument to be made against this, or it wouldn't have been shot down so many times before. The response has been overwhelmingly positive thus far (to be honest, that seems like a pretty childish choice of words in the second poll option, but I doubt it played much of a part in the numbers), but it would be unfair if we didn't allow some time for arguments against the idea. One day simply isn't enough.

I'll keep checking this thread whenever I log in. It shouldn't take long to know for sure if the forum will be created.

I am all for a history forum. The concept that people rewrite history to suit their own needs frankly disgusts me and while a new history forum wouldn't completely undo such damage, it would certainly help.

Also, fuck having TheDarkRodent as a moderator. At least, for now.

I am sorry there are those who feel the wording on the poll options was childish. As a life long enthusiast of history I have met more people than I can remember who simply place little or no value on the significance of understanding history. I am accustomed to people from younger generations even displaying disdain for the topic. In my perception there are people who are genuinely disinterested in the topic. So to those few who few my choice of words as childish I offer no apology only the explanation that from my experiences and people I have met there are a sizable minority of people who have no interest in the subject or of learning anything regarding it.

But let's look at what is really going on with this petty point of contention. With the exception of MandatorySuicide, who did not take exception to the wording so much as he acknowledged it was not perhaps the best choice of verbiage, the only 3 people who have taken issue with the poll wording were as follows.

Cloudcat, water bottle, and Ryan1711.

Ryan will take exception with anything that comes from almost anything that comes from my keyboard and is likely to argue with anything he feels he might have leg to stand on. Even with that he still voted yes but felt it necessary to deride a great suggestion in some fashion simply based on the person who made it.

Cloudcat has been trying to flame input I have given to other suggestion in this forum for the last two days as he has taken some childish personal dislike to me for some reason. Perhaps because I spanked one of his friends in POEO. I honestly don't know nor do I care why he has his flamethrower sights trained in my direction. What I do know is that he childishly voted no even though he openly supports the idea.

water bottle I hardly know I saw some behavior from him early in my Zoklet experience and placed him on my ignore list. TBH he has been there since that day. I only removed him in order to read his feedback on this suggestion. So why he felt compelled to take exception to verbiage that the overwhelming majority of readers had no issue with is beyond me.

It is really sad, I must note, that a good idea that has potential to make the community a more interesting place is even subject to this type of petty mudslinging over an misinterpretation of intentions by a small minority of persons.

This is the type of intolerance that I am hoping will lessen if we can learn from one another by viewing history from each others eyes. So please, let's focus on what is good for zoklet and not a few peoples petty personal vendettas.
