Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
Depends on if you want to stay busy or be bored. You will probably make better money as a grocery store clerk and have benefits as well. Not to mention working with a few hot females.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
Grocery store clerks have the potential to move into management if they're driven, but the pay is usually quite low. Bakers and meat cutters often have the chance to attend school, or gain certifications, though their company. It's an avenue worth exploring if you are interested in working at a grocery store.
Security guards have good job security and skills are transferable. Security guards often make a living wage, or more.
Depending on the location and dangers, I'd go with the security guard position.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
Uhhh.... not that security is prestigious or special or anything, but grocery store retail work is pretty much the shittiest, lowest paid job next to fast food.
At this point in my life, I wouldn't mind being a lazy shitbag security guard.... especially if it was for a big name or private security company rather than like.... mall cop or target LP.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
The two non-university jobs I would consider:
1. Armored truck driver. Consider it. Driving around in a futuristic car as big as a tank, escorting huge bags of money around and walking into supermarkets etc. taking huge sacks of money, with a revolver on your side. That'd be great.
2. Crane driver. Self explanatory.

Security guard. When you do nothing it still counts as work.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
LOL @ whoever said grocery store clerks have a chance at management positions. YEA! Maybe after 10 years of slave labor you can move up to front end manager and make $15/hr!!! Lmao....
Security guard ftw. You just sit there and fuck around on your laptop. Pay is way better than some fucking cashier.
protip: if you have to deal with the general public the job sucks

I don't know what kind of experience you've had with actual jobs, but if you actually show initiative and work well, it's surprisingly easy to get a management job.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
Security guard, with enough work experience you could probably land a job with a factory or a corporation and make a solid career out of it. Your starting salary might be a bit low and your ceiling might not be to high but with overtime I figure you could make 70k a year with a decent 401k. You'll probably have to work a lot of overtime, 60-70 hours a week to earn that kind of money though.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
I worked for 3 months on the checkouts in a supermarket (guess that's the same thing as a grocery store) and it was the most boring job I've ever done, couldn't take it any longer than that and had to quit. So yeah... if you have a choice between the two definitely don't choose the grocery store.

Yeah but you don't really "meet" people. You just put their shopping through and they pay you, repeat for 8 hours. You can have a few words with them maybe but it's not like you're gonna get into conversations with people. At least as a security guard you can read, watch tv maybe, browse the internet on a phone or whatever etc.

Yeah I guess that would be a bit more relaxed. At least for me when I did it there was always a queue so you always had to do it fast to move on to the next person.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
be security gaurd , you'll make moar money , it may be boring but you may cover that boredom by taking your labtop w/ you or some form of entertainment, if in fact you get one of those jobs where they leave you alone and you just sit there and do jack shit but walk around once a while in the parking lot or building to see everythings fine and dandie.

Re: security guard or grocery store clerk
Just watch out for the 'pay us 200$ to get a job as security guard" offers, there are a lot of them in the NYC area where you basically take some meager course, shell out anywhere between a 100$ and 600$ and then they tell you that there's no job at the end waiting for you.
That's when I stopped searching for security guard positions and applied for overnight stock person. Although I think security would be cooler.
